Welcome the newest member of the rescue gang, Ares!

Ares is a 6 month old (approx) robo who was up from for rehoming because he was "too fast" for his original owners.

Since being here he's really come out of his shell and is interacting more with people. He's very curious and will often follow you around the cage to see what you're doing.

He's in a 100x50cm tank style enclosure and he uses every bit of it, something that I think he didn't have before given his reaction to being put in there initially. He'd only use the space of a shoebox and took him a few days to realise that all of that was for him.

Ares waits patiently for his 'treats' on top of his reptile hide and if I take too long he'll start pacing and come up to the glass and stare at me. Ares will happily take food from my hand and loves sunflower and pumpkin seeds, but really looks forward to his weekly treat of a coriander leaf.

Recently I have been able to stroke him within the cage. We're not happy being picked up by hand yet but will happy go into a jar or cup to be picked up.

I don't understand why he was given up as he's actually pretty slow. While he does do 'zoomies' on his wheel, he only does a leisurely walk around his cage.
The only other time he's shown his speedy side is when our first out of cage taming session went wrong and he ended up under my bed.

You have made such wonderful progress with little Ares. I love how he looks forward to his coriander leaf each week. He seems very confident and happy now. I love all the pictures you have taken. He is super cute.

I love his little white face! Ares is so cute.
It has always amazed me how tame Robos become when with you.

I think the reason Robos are often given away because they are too fast is because people don't give them time to settle in and they don't take time to tame them.

People buy a tiny cute hamster, usually for a child and then expect the hamster to "perform" like a fluffy new toy. They expect the child to be able to stroke the Robo and "play" with it.
Of course the Robo starts to run frantically to get away from grabbing hands because he's scared senseless.

Eventually the child gets bored of the new "toy" and Robos like Ares and Finley end up with people like you and me.
That's the lucky ones.

He's gorgeous! I love his little white face too! He reminds me of our first robo, Nugget. It's great he will take food from you in the cage. Pip won't do that. I have concocted a way to get Pip (Robo) out easily without freaking him out - it doesn't look very glamorous though (especially in a lovely natural set up like yours) but if he happily goes into a mug that's easier!

It's a kind of plastic pod hide with a tube attached. Pip goes into it regularly and I just put my hand over the tube and lift the whole thing out and into the playpen area. The tube helps as it means he can't shoot out quick enough when he sees my hand appear!

Ares has an amazing set up there and looks like he's enjoying it.

I haven't updated this for a while as I've been busy working on hand taming Ares. He will take food from you and doesn't care when you are in the cage and will come up to you, but he will not step on your hand.

He becomes very unpredictable when being held and flies everywhere; I worry he'll hurt himself.

We finally got their! He does get startled if I move my hand while he's on it, but will soon come back.

That is real progress! Pip won't come anywhere near my hand in the cage! Although I can handle him in a box out of the cage.

Aww how rewarding it is that Ares will take a treat from you now. He is so cute.

Lovely to meet Ares & catch up on his progress, what a gorgeous little ham 😍

This month is Ares birthday month! I can't believe he's one. He also had his nails trimmed last night, for the first time. What a stressful event! Thankfully it was just his front paws.

Ares will climb into your hand without a problem, however, as soon as you go to 'trap' him to do his nails or body check he freaks out. Hopefully it will be a while before we do that again, which will give us time to work on that.

Happy birthday Ares! It is so lovely to have an update on him. I think you did so well to cut his tiny nails. How lovely he is comfortable to climb into your hand. :)

Happy Birthday Ares.
It’s good to hear how he’s doing & the progress you’ve made together.

Happy Birthday Ares!
Can't believe you are 1 already. Hope you get lots of lovely treats.

So far he's been treated with millet sprays, a whimzee, a nail trim, extra mealworms and sunflower seeds and some home grown parsley.

Happy Birthday Ares :) At least he's all neat and tidy for his birthday with trimmed nails :ROFLMAO:

Aw - I'm sure he'll get over it and I'm sure he'll enjoy his birthday treats.
