Hi everyone! Today a family friend who used to own a hamster donated some treats and chew toys to me for my Syrian, but I’m unsure of what’s safe. I’ve tried to research some of them but I’m getting very mixed reviews. If you guys know which can be safely given to my hamster and how much, and what cannot be given to my hamster at all, please let me know! I appreciate being educated.

For context, she owned a dwarf hamster and I own a female Syrian with a big appetite. I will throw out anything if anyone has any bad experiences as I’m very stingy about what my hamster is eating and I want to ensure she’s staying healthy so she can live the most fulfilling life I can provide.

If anybody wants a close up on any of the items, please just reply! I’ll get back as quick as I can. Don’t be afraid to tell me if any of these treats aren’t healthy.

(Ps don’t mind the mess. This photo was taken right in front of my hamster’s cage and I have yet to tidy it up.)

We need to see the ingredients for each one. Personally I prefer to use tasty vegetables and salads as treats and for training. Fresh whole food is better than anything in a packet. Peas, cucumber pieces, sprays, lettuce, all often very popular and much healthier than the majority of manufactured treats ❤️

To be honest I wouldn't use most of those for similar reasons :-) The Versele Laga Complete crunch and the Vitakraft crunchy bears might be ok :-) Depending on the ingredients. All the drops won't be very healthy. I use pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds or half a walnut as treats - or the occasional bit of porridge or scrambled egg - they love fresh food.

There are a few healthy hamster treats available - mainly from Rosewood - the peanut and papaya cookies and shrimp cookies are nice and popular. Also Complete crock treats are ok.

Thank you for the suggestions! She absolutely adores fresh veggies, especially carrots. I’ve given her a couple very small portions and I’ve been practicing having her eat out of the palm of my hands. I appreciate the help.

Thank you! I’ve heard that the drops weren’t very good but I just wanted to check to see what everyone had to say on here. I’ve been giving yolandi very small portions of fresh veggies and fruit as occasional treats- every couple days so far- and she absolutely adores it. I was mostly wondering because I wanted to see if any of them would be okay to use in boredom breakers and stuff.

I’ll also definitely have to see if she likes scrambled eggs! I’ve never heard of anyone giving them to hamsters before this but I’m sure she’d love it.

They love scrambled egg :-) It's both a treat and a bit of extra protein. It's best to scramble it with a bit of water rather than milk. You can just scramble one egg in a mug in the microwave - check every 10 seconds. I just give about a quarter of a teaspoonful on a spoon and they eat it from there. Once it's cooled a bit and not too hot. But not cold either - just warm.
