All my piggies!

She's a very fortunate piggy to have moved in with you. She's such a lovely warm colour.

Thankyou :) we have settled on the name Ivy for her. She has tried to nip a few times, mostly when touching her belly. I got a weight for her yesterday to track, in case there's any large weight gains etc and had a gentle feel for any babies (couldn't feel anything)

Shes an absolutely lovely little pig though, I'm so glad she's here!

Ivy suits her :-) I like it.

Ivy is a beautiful name for her. She looks to have rex in her. I had a piggy with similar fur and I nicknamed her little lamb. :)

Little Ivy has landed on her paws with you. I hope there's no babies, but if there is she's in good hands.

Did she have a cage mate or just 'play dates' with the boys? If she didn't the biting could also be from that. I'd imagine she's a scared little piggy that lacks confidence. No doubt she'll settle quickly with the help of your herd.

I found that to be the case with my 2 pigs Autumn and Blossom. I quarantined them from the others for a bit and they were very nervous. As soon as they were put in the same room as the others they completely changed and became more relaxed. Then settled even more when they met hus-boar Cyril. You wouldn't think they were the same pigs.

Looking back at the messages with her old owner, reading between the lines she was living with the 2 males rather than having play dates, amazes me how adults don't understand putting males and females together creates babies!!

Unfortunately the is she/isn't she has concluded that.. yes she is 🤦‍♀️ I would say she is about 5 weeks along currently as she is gaining weight quite quickly, sitting at 918g today having only turned 6 months on the 21st, that's 126g gained in the 12 days I've had her 😔 She's drinking on average 200ml of water per day which is double what she should be and her belly is very firm, I imagine in the next 2 weeks babies will be palpable, although I am not handling her much at the moment, lap time is voluntary when she wants to walk into and out of the carrier during cage clean outs. I tried adding her yo the herd and she went nuts, very dominant as is her right to be when pregnant, pregnant sows are automatically top of the hierarchy, none of my herd minded but as her behaviour meant she was very likely pregnant she's on her own again to prevent the stress of meeting new pigs causing miscarriage, which is a shame as she's very eager to meet them.

I am worried with how narrow her hips look when she stretches out, not going to lie.. but I have 4 piggies at the vet on the 1st so I'll give him a heads up there may be an emergency cesarean on the cards, just in case. But hopefully she's young and flexible enough still to be fine by herself.

I am sorry to hear Ivy is pregnant. It really is infuriating how ignorant some people are. I hope Ivy and the babies are healthy and the birth goes well. I can understand how concerned you are.

Thankyou! It really is infuriating, these people have children! Surely they know how things work..

While it's not her fault at all, it's just my luck this happens at the same time Poppet likely will need spaying due to ovarian cysts 🙃 hopefully I'm not caring for 2 post op piggies and a newborn litter at the same time 🤦‍♀️

Oh gosh, that is a lot for you to have going on at once. I could never cope as well as you do. You are amazing.

It makes me wonder if they were intending to breed her perhaps? But then why rehome her? Yes it does seem a bit dumb keeping males and females together.

I don't know about piggies so I wouldn't know if her hips look a bit narrow but it's good you're aware of these things and have a good vet.

Aw thankyou, at this point its second nature now! I don't know what I'd do with myself if I only had a pair of healthy piggies 😅

I was wondering as well if they were wanting to breed, but decided against it when she started to bite. But then there's still people out there who think they won't breed if they're related etc so nothing suprises me anymore.

It is lucky the boars did not fight over her. Ivy is in safe hands now that she is with you. 🙂

I just rescued adult male and female Syrians who were kept in the same cage without intent of breeding. People are beyond me as well.

As a matter of interest. Why did you rule out breeding based on the fact that Ivy bit?

As for Ivy, she's lucky to be in your care and i hope that she'll have a natural birth.

It's more assumption really than anything, but I may just be putting 2 and 2 together to get 5 😅 she said she would have loved to keep her but couldn't risk her around her child any more due to the biting. However she knew their exact birthdays and all 3 were specific breeds that aren't easy to come by in my area so I'm also assuming she got them from a breeder rather than a petshop. So if she did get them to breed, it seems the biting is what made her decide against it in the end.

But thankyou! I hope your Syrian is either not pregnant or manages to have her babies safely too! You would think being solitary would make it easier for people to realise males and females should be kept apart but apparently not! 🤦‍♀️ I'm glad they've ended up with you.

Could the biting be caused by Ivy's pregnancy? I'd also suspect that breeding may have been the original intention of keeping Ivy with two males.

Only the male Syrian is with me. The female is in a rescue who has taken in pregnant hamsters before so she'll be well cared for.

I would imagine so, she nipped me the first time I checked her belly but ever since, she hasn't even attempted to bite me and I've even stuck my fingers in her mouth checking her teeth etc and just to see if she how she would respond.. I have a feeling she was only biting because they weren't being mindful of her abdomen when handling her causing pain or discomfort.
If you properly support her she's fine, she actually enjoys coming out! At this point though I move her by letting her walk in and out the carrier so I don't accidentally harm any babies.

Shes still doing very well bless her and growing still, she will be a kilo soon!

Ivy looks so well and it sounds like she is really enjoying being with you and getting the love and care she deserves.

She is very sweet. I kept Piggies for many years we first got 3 when my daughter was 10. I had one with a similar colouring to Ivy. Her name was Twix 🥰
