I think the worry about flying saucers stems from pet shops recommending the small 6.5in one for Syrians as a wheel instead of an upright wheel. I was given this incorrect advice myself.

If you are worried then don't get one. Opinions differ on many things to do with hamsters and sometimes we have to rely on our own judgement.

Personally, i like them and so do our hamsters. I have both sizes in their playgrounds and have noticed that the hamsters prefer the large 12in one, even Robo Bernard who is the smallest hamster.
Thank you Beryl. I'm going to look out for a large flying saucer for Albert. I think one of my local independent pet shops sells them.

Before you buy it, check that it is spinning easily. I have two Kaytee 12in saucers and they are great but i have had a Trixie 12in saucer that didn't spin properly.

Thank you Beryl 🙂 I've just phoned a few independent pet shops in my area. They all sell them in different sizes. I'll go and have a look over the weekend.

I bought my two 12in saucers in the local hardware store of all places and i live in a very small market town.

I've upset Albert and now I'm upset...
Yesterday I decided to put fresh chopped up cardboard in Albert's dig box. It wasn't until I tipped all the old cardboard into the kitchen bin that I saw he had a hoard in there. How stupid am I?
I put some of his favourite seeds in the fresh dig box to hopefully make up for my massive mistake.
When Albert woke up last night he must have known straight away from the smell that something was different with his dig box. He went straight over to his dig box and had a dig around. He wasn't happy with me.
I offered him a few different treats and he refused all of them. That has never happened before. I offered him his taxi mug and he refused that too. The only upside was he let me stroke him while he had a wash.
Albert then went back to his nest which he never normally does. Once he's up he's up and if he wants a snooze he normally goes into his hanging basket.
I've checked on him this morning and all the treats he refused last night that I left for him for later have gone.
I will never make that mistake again with his dig box.
Will he forgive me?
🐹💕

Don't worry. Albert is in a huff but he will snap out of it and forgive you.
I'm sure that you are a lot more upset then he is.
I totally understand how you feel though because i've been there myself often enough.

What Beryl said! Try not to worry, we’ve all been there & done that sort of thing.
Your bond with Albert is a lot stronger than one little mistake, he’ll soon get over it.

He will be. Hamsters aren't deep thinkers and they don't bear grudges. Albert will be munching on his treats and there was no harm done. He'll soon hoard again and it will give him something to do.

He will forgive you x A bit of pampering and bribery helps as well. I always talk to them and say sorry in a very sorry voice :-) I swear they listen. And scattering a few treats and hiding the odd special treat for them to find, often distracts them from it. I think of them more like children. Crying one minute and give them an ice cream and they're happy again :) Although not ice cream for hamsters obviously. An extra special treat here is half a walnut.

Thank you Maz 😊

I got this large 30.4 cm flying saucer for Albert's free roaming time. It's from a independent pet shop the other side of the city that I've never been to before. They sell a lot of Trixie products in there including upright wheels.

He was probably just a bit surprised it was gone, I’m sure he’ll forgive you and will get to work storing a new hoard over the next few days. Look forward to hearing how Albert gets on with his new flying saucer. 🙂

The saucer looks great.

That's the saucers we have here. They are great. Even Bernard can run on it.

That pet shop seems a good find. I've never seen the Trixie upright wheels in a shop.

I was very surprised to see the Trixie upright wheels in there. They had a lot of Trixie products for all different types of animals. It's a big shop and jammed packed with products. I didn't know where to look first.

I've just been to the till at Lidl's and looked at the cashier's name tag. Albert. My immediate thought was: Huh! That's a hamster name.
