If you are buying it from the actual store you can take a little ruler with you just to measure the entrance. I wish all websites put the measurement of the holes in hamster hides.

I haven’t had one but I have seen one, they aren’t very big but big enough for a Russian to get in.

I agree it would make life easier if they put the entrance size. Looks like I'm going on a shopping trip with a tape measure.

The hole is almost the height of the house which is about 10cm or 8.5cm not which is height & depth but that’s fine for a Russian.

Dwarf Toby has one and it's nice because the base is open. You can also get a pear and an orange.

Is it plastic? I have the Pear (got it for our first Robo) and thought it was ceramic when I got it but it's quite soft plastic.

It's a different one then. It is soft plastic but well made.

I just swung by a p@h on my way home. Yes, those are solid and heavier than the one Toby has.

Maybe they have stopped making the ones like your Beryl and my Pear - I googled them and could only find them on eBay. There are quite a few different strawberry hides on Amazon and some are ceramic - which is also nice. But maybe depends where you want to put it. I tend to keep ceramic things on a shelf for support.

I've seen them at Porton Aquatics not that long ago. The one Toby has came with a recycling cage i think.

The one at p@h is fine for a dwarf and definitely big enough.

Albert loves his free roaming time.

Last night I sat on the living room floor and hubby sat on the sofa. Albert climbed up me and then down my arm onto the footstool and then up the blanket ramp onto the sofa and then climbed all over hubby. Then Albert does it all again in reverse.

I think Albert recognises his name now. He was sitting on the front door mat and I called Albert. Albert turned around and did his meerkat impression. I said Albert again and he ran straight to me so I could scoop him up.

Now I'm very nervous about this because I don't like flying saucers. But my hubby thinks Albert should be given the opportunity to use one for free roaming time. I'm happy to get one but what size would Albert need? I don't want Albert to hurt his back.

I’m not a fan of flying saucers & can’t remember what sizes they come in now.

I really love them I've only used them for robos and Syrians though. It's true they can fly off a few times at first, while they're getting the hang of it but if it's out of the cage in an open area, he can't really hurt himself and they just pick up and jump back on again. It's the 6.5" or 7" flying saucer for dwarf hamsters. I think he'd enjoy it. If you're worried, you could put some cushions on the floor around it at first

Albert sounds amazing. I hear more negatives regarding flying saucers and have no experience of them but have seen Syrians using them no bent backs and seem to be enjoying an open disc

I think the worry about flying saucers stems from pet shops recommending the small 6.5in one for Syrians as a wheel instead of an upright wheel. I was given this incorrect advice myself.

If you are worried then don't get one. Opinions differ on many things to do with hamsters and sometimes we have to rely on our own judgement.

Personally, i like them and so do our hamsters. I have both sizes in their playgrounds and have noticed that the hamsters prefer the large 12in one, even Robo Bernard who is the smallest hamster.
