For those who have made their own shelves in pine do you always treat it with plastikote and food question are these OK for a dwarfie it mentions suger on the back of the package but only as part of the carbs 20230905_084352.jpgI have them in my cereal and they are definitely not sweet to taste tia

I think it is a good idea to apply a coat of plastikote if the hamster wees on shelves. I plastikoted all mine.

I would not feed any fruit to a dwarf hamster at all as they still contain sugar.

Im sure other members will have their ideas.😊

I always paint larger shelves to protect them against urine. I don't always paint smaller ledges as I don't mind as much if they're ruined.

I wouldn't give any dried fruit to a Russian dwarf personally. Sugar is sugar, whatever the source.

I always plastikote all wood, you can never be sure what might need protecting & it saves having to bin anything if it does get peed on.

I wouldn’t give dried goji berries either, I do very occasionally give a fresh blueberry but really not often, drief fruit is more concentrated so best avoided.

Thank you for this advice always best to check if not sure sorry Pete no berries for you. As for plastikote just looked on Amazon so many different kinds do I need matt finish and are they all safe we have some metallic gold already (used on knobs nothing hamster) wondered if that would do I'm not picky on colour sure Pete wouldn't complain about it being blingy I just want to be sure its safe and non slip

It needs to be the Plastikote enamel paint not any of the other kinds like the sprays which aren’t safe.
The only non slippery ones are the flat white & flat black although the other colours aren’t super slippery & fine for them really.
I’m actually not sure about all the metallic colours tbh.

Thank you so much for the link saves me much searching and takes the guess work out of it

No the clear is quite slippery, the “slippery” ones are still ok to ue though, I’ve never had a ham go flying off a shelf or anything!

I don't find the clear one slippery as such, but it isn't matt. But neither does it have such a rough finish as plain wood. The garden green colour however is quite shiny and can be slippery. I sometimes put hemp mat on top if a hamster is slipping on a particular shelf.

I usually use clear but I like the harbour blue as well and that was quite matt.

I’ve never found the white to be watery at all, you do need to give it a really good stir before you use it though as it is a bit separated until stirred.
I tried the Buttercup yellow once & was really disappointed with the colour I love the sunshine yellow though.

We just put 2 coats on the first coat looked a bit like shabby chic and I wasn't sure it would be waterproof
