Try not to worry if you don’t see him for a night or two, it’s quite normal for them to be active the first couple of nights when they arrive and everything is new & exciting but then they often get a bit reclusive while they settle in properly before getting into a proper routine & becoming more interactive again.

That's good to know. I haven't seen him at all since Monday evening now - perhaps getting him out then to handle was too much too soon, even though he came to me, and seemed happy? I have resisted the temptation to lift the hide lid or peek at him in any way, I have heard him moving around underground a bit around 9pm the past two nights, and he has been out and taken some (not all) of the food I have scattered overnight... so he's still alive in there..!

I'm going to save some pennies for a camera so I can see him come out at night, I think that will be reassuring - I haven't seen him use his wheel at all yet (and still no idea where he is toileting!) but hopefully he is just spending a few days settling in after his initial explorations 🥰

It all sounds perfectly normal. In about 10 days time he'll probably be leaping around and looking confident and interacting more. :) Meanwhile it's a case of chatting! So he gets to know your voice and gets used to your presence. Many of us have sat there having conversations with a hamster cage with no visible hamster! He's probably just realised his cage is permanent and he needs to make a home there, rather than an interesting out of cage experience, like the first day might have seemed like.

I know it is hard being patient when you first get them but it does pay off, giving the enough time to just settle in helps them feel more secure.
I think most of use have probably spent quite a lot of time chatting to an apparently empty cage! If they’re a complete no show I’ll often leave a nice treat near the house when I’ve finished chatting so they can begin to associate my voice & scent with something nice.

Tonight, I have left husband to chat to him 😳Had to go to bed early cos really tired (old!). I have left him some lovely food including DIY egg boxes covered in seeds. And a bit of fresh which he loves. And he has been out every night for last week.

So don’t feel too guilty 😕.

Well I do… but trying not to think about it 💕

I hope you are feeling a bit better orangetails. These little creatures we love are nocturnal (especially Syrians), and sometimes we are not! X

I saw his nose tonight! 😍 I heard him rustling so I tempted him with a little piece of cucumber 🥰

It doesn’t look like he came out much last night 🥺 but he’s clearly been busy building a nest and tunnels underground - the back corner is getting higher with all the bedding he is pushing up 😆 So clever how that substrate holds tunnels!

I’ll have to figure out cleaning him out at some point - there’s no sign anywhere I can see in his cage so he must be going in his nest. But there’s no smell at all so I can leave him completely alone for now can’t I?

Oh - he did eat the lollipop ❤️

Spoke too soon - look who I can see! 😍😍

I'm in a similar situation with new Syrian Cedric who isn't potty trained yet. I have no idea where he pees but will wait till i can smell it.

Looks like he's emerging from the house!

Oreo is so flipping cute! 😍

He’s started showing himself just as I start to turn everything off and head up to bed, much to my husband’s disgust, as I have stayed downstairs to chat to him for a bit meaning a late bedtime 😆

Still no smell - he’s been here a week today and clearly toileting out of reach in his burrow/nest - shall I just keep leaving him for now?

Personally, I would leave him for now cos if you can’t smell anything he can’t be that dirty? Rather than disturb his home which he is obviously having fun making with all his little burrows etc.

But maybe see if anyone else thinks differently 🤔.

He is super dooper cute you could literally snog his face off 💕x

He is soooo cute lovely photo 😍

That little face is adorable 😍

I’d leave him be for a bit longer rather than disturb his burrows just when he’s getting more confident.
