oh sorry you prefer his cage on the floor! That wouldn’t work then (think I need to read all the posts before I reply šŸ™„).

This is the Ikea table I have:

Has a handy shelf

I have something very similar to that but it's much taller :-) I got it so I could "stack" two Plazas - one on the bottom shelf and one on the top. I only use the top now and have both cages at waist height! I can't find it for sale any more but it was a good way of having a cage near the floor, with a surface above it.

I’m sure you will come to a resolution. Sometimes it’s good to wait a few days to see how things pan out…

He is the cutest boy tho and is so lucky to be living with you 🄰.

The shelf looks great! Storage is a problem so the bottom shelf would be handy. It’s not so much that I prefer it on the floor just I haven’t thought what else is best to do yet… it’s already becoming pretty apparent that having it on the floor is a bit awkward for all except easy access to his playpen… 😣

If you had a top door you could just sit on a chair and spot clean from the top. To be honest, I found that with a hamster using a litter tray that was all that needed doing each week really and the rest of the cage stayed clean and dry. Let's hope he just chooses an easy toilet spot!

I had a thought about the multiroom house - is it the trixie one? Sometimes they're not keen on that middle compartment wall as it makes the rooms smaller. I know some people used to knock that out so it was one bigger compartment in the middle.
Yeah it is the Trixie one - I had it from my previous hamster (he used it as was, but back then I wasn’t aware of tunnelling substrates so he didn’t burrow beneath it and presumably liked how it acted as a kind of ready made burrow… I’ll definitely try knocking the middle bit out! I just can’t afford a different style at the moment. Do you think if I knocked the middle out I could move his food store and try to encourage him to use it that way, or am I best leaving him to his awkward corner?!

Cleaning out (how best to) is definitely a topic i will have to start at some point - I’ve read the articles and it’s all a bit different to what I am used to from years ago! There’s no chance I can spot clean the corner he has currently burrowed in unless I pull the whole cage forward and unclip the top wire part šŸ™ˆ

Tonight my daughter and I made some cardboard/seed ā€˜lollipops’ I saw in the diy section (sorry I can’t remember whose post it was to credit!)

Oreo hasn’t deigned to wake up yet šŸ™ˆ My daughter is disgusted, she hasn’t seen him at all yet (he’s mine not hers so it’s fine, but she’s desperate to meet him!) last two evenings he’s been out by 9, but tonight he’s still sleeping (new hamster mum I hope he’s okay worries..!)

They look very tasty for Oreo. :)

Maybe he is a bit tired form the excitement of the last few days….

Davy is normally awake by 9 and it isn’t long before he wants out. But first few days he came out so late a couple of times I had to go to bed! Most nights tho, I get him out to go in his playroom.

I expect Oreo will get into a routine soon 😁x

Yeah I certainly didn’t expect him to be happy to be handled last night, so it’s fine if he still wants time to settle in. I can hear him scuffling around underground now so I’m no longer panicking he’s died on me šŸ™ˆ

(Anxiety is an unfortunate side effect of brain injury so it’s something I’m having to work to curb 🄓)

I can understand you feeling anxious. Do you have a camera? Having a camera helps me a lot as I can find out what my hamster gets up to at night.

I get anxious about Davy too don’t worry. They seem so little and vulnerable šŸ˜–.

I just can’t stay up beyond 10, so I was hoping to get eyes on him to check he’s okay. I’ve heard him now, even though he’s still not surfaced, so I won’t worry tonight - he just won’t get any time out of his cage is all. But he’s got plenty to occupy him and he probably is still tired from his travels and all the exploring and settling in to his new home 🄰

I want to get one but I don’t understand any of the technology - are they easy enough to use?

Another side effect of brain injury is my stupid cotton wool brain 🄓 I just can’t seem to read/take anything in anymore!

I am hopeless with technology so I got my partner to set up the cameras for me. Now that they are set up I have an app to watch what is going on. I have a Reolink camera. I love it as the pictures are clear and I can save clips to rewatch.

It’s really weird having a pet you can’t really check on to see they’re settling in okay! šŸ™ˆ My cats and ponies I check and spend time with every day. I know it’s a good thing he’s made himself a nice little burrow but it means I can’t even see him when he’s sleeping! I definitely want to get a camera. I can see he’s been out each night collecting food though and the water level goes down, so I’m sure he’s fine!

That sounds fab 🄰 my husband is really Not Interested in the hamster šŸ™ˆ but I’ll get him to help me at some point, he’s very techy so I’m sure it’ll all make much more sense to him! It would be so cool to see him using his wheel and stuff!

I think maybe knock the middle bit out and put a bit of food and a smelly treat inside the main compartment of the house :) So rather than moving his hoard just add some new food inside the house plus a bit of cheddar cheese or cucumber and the smell should tempt him in. Also if you leave a little trail of sunflower seeds leading inside the house and a big pile of strips of toilet paper outside the house near the door. That should tempt him inside and he'll probably decide to nest in there. It can take them a few days to decide where to nest though.

I learned the hard way about taking the roof off the house a few times in the early days! I had a couple of quite shy hamsters and they just moved out when I did that. So I left it alone lol.

The nightcams are very simple. They are just plug in and go. You need to put a micro sd card in it to watch the recordings next day and install the app on your phone so you can watch. The app side of it might be slightly fiddly to set up initially - maybe someone could help with that? I have this littlelf one.

As for worrying about them - as long as the fresh veg has gone in the morning, I don't worry! He'll be fine :-).
