Waffles

A great hamster toy/bed that costs almost nothing ❤️ They always come up with the unexpected. Such little personalities 🥰

I used to have an egg box hammock that was popular :-) It was really only there to give overhead cover, but the hamster kept climbing into it :)

Oh Waffles!!! I thought we were making good progress today. This morning Waffles was up and I went over to say hello. I put my arm along the front door of the cage like I normally do as her bedding is at door height as she could potentially jump out injuring herself. She normally sits beside my arm and I talk to her. Well this morning she hopped up onto my arm beside my elbow and waddled along it to my hand (back of my hand as she doesn't like hands) she then hopped off and promptly turned around and bit me 😬on the side of my hand, she drew blood. She has nipped before but not like that. Oh Waffles what are we going to do with you. I keep telling you I'm a friend and I love you. 😵‍💫

That is rather sad. Perhaps some thick gloves might be the way to go. She seems to nip and bite hard on reflex. She could be territorial of course and much more friendly in a play pen 🥰
I hope she becomes more accepting. Perhaps giving her treats with tongs or hand protection might change how she feels about hands 🙏

That's the thing. She has been taking treats from my fingers since day one. No problems. So confusing. However she's never walked on me before. If I was to try and pet her she doesn't like it and either turns round to try bite or puts her hands up at me (so I don't try to pet her anymore)

Sounds like she only tolerates hands if they offer food and treats!

Started giving Waffles playpen time to try and calm her down. As if I'm in the room she chews on the bars for attention and food. However she seems to be worse when I put her back in the cage. 🤦🏻‍♀️I need to try and get some gloves for handling. Not sure which ones to get if anyone had any recommendations. She's definitely keeping me on my toes. My husbands theory is that she was used to a ball in her old home (she was there 9 months apparently) and he thinks that's what she's looking for, but I binned it when we rehomed her as I thought hamster balls are unsafe. And not keen to get her into a ball again. I will probably persevere with the playpen time. It's been a week now this Tuesday I've been using the playpen gradually building the time up. When she appears to be becoming stressed I put her back to her cage.

It sounds like positive progress with the playpen :-) Some people recommend gardening gloves. I had some but they weren't very thick. I ended up using my winter gloves which were suede on the outside and quite thick as they had wadding on the inside.

I'll need to look out a pair of gloves. Hopefully that stops her when she realises it has no effect

Gardening gloves tend to work for dwarfs, syrians I have no clue. You're probably right that she just wants extra out of enclosure time. If it keeps up after accommodating her, maybe there is something wrong with the enclosure. Could be a hidden pee spot or something else that's bothering her in her burrows.

It can be hard to figure out sometimes

Yes, balls are best avoided. The slots can trap their feet and twist them. A hamster wheel in the cage and in the playpen is a safer option. They also often enjoy tunnels. Socks was very fond of his tunnels as a young ham ❤

Yes. Definitely I know balls are unsafe. I'll need to get more toys for the playpen for her.

Cardboard boxes are often popular 😊. Does she have a wheel in the playpen?
Yes. A spare wheel I have. I don't want to keep moving her niteangel one from her cage to the playpen (I'm accident prone and it was expensive). It's not a huge wheel in the playpen but her back isn't arched on it. It's the savic orbital wheel. The green one. I also put a flying saucer in the playpen. She has had good fun on that tonight. So She's got the omlet cardboard house, a wooden house, a kitchen roll tube, her little plastic house from pets at home (which is also the hamster taxi! 🤣) and her wheel and saucer. My husband got an Amazon delivery today that's got a good box in it. So I was going to make a dig box of some sort for her in the playpen. Also do I need to buy a separate playpen for Bruce to use if he wants to go in it. Most of the time he doesn't want out and runs away. Occasionally he does come out for a while but usually prefers his own space.

I bet she loves it in there with all that 😊. Mine have always loved flying saucers in the playpen too. The Savic orbital wheel is good too 😊
