Hi - I have been doing a lot of research for my hammy to help him live the best life.
Unfortunately I was misguided by pets at home and bought a cage that apparently isn't shoutable!!!
This makes me so mad at myself. I waited 3 months to question their advice.

Reddit talks a lot about plastic storage boxes that are great for hamsters but unfortunately I can not find one big enough.
Please, if anyone in the UK has a link to a decent storage container link it - this is so stressful! I hate that my poor man could be un-happy!

There's one on here :) This is a list of all suitable cages and part way down there's a bin from Asda (it's also sold by Argos). What species of hamster do you have? If it's a Syrian you'd probably be better getting something like the Savic Plaza cage. If you need to get a new cage, you could try taking the old one back and saying it isn't big enough. Some people have done that and got a refund. A bin cage is usually the cheapest option though, if you don't mind the diy.

I use the 145L Really useful box, it makes a great cage for a dwarf but wouldn’t really be big enough for a Syrian.

Don't get too mad at yourself. Many of us have been in the exact same situation, including myself.

I'd also recommend the 145l really useful box for a dwarf hamster. It has a flat lid which is easier to mesh than a grooved one.

I don't think you would be able to find a storage box big enough for a Syrian though.
I have seen a 150l grey storage box at B&Q not long ago but didn't get the inside measurements.

I just checked the measurements and may be ok for a dwarf but too small for a Syrian.

There's only that 100cm one from Asda/Argos that I linked on the list of cages, that's significantly bigger than the RUB 145 litre really. It's a really good size. It's this one, and only costs £35 from Asda (costs more from Argos).

I wonder what the actual floor space measures. Storage boxes taper quite a lot and 100cm would be the widest part on this box which is the lid.

True but that's the same for all of them. It's the largest bin I'm aware of.

I've just realized that this thread is under 'Russian dwarf hamsters' which answers my question. You have a male dwarf hamster.
Sorry, it's my age. I can be slow at times.

You have suitable options listed above if you decide to go for a bin cage. Mesh and cable ties for the lid you can get at B&Q.

I don't know if this is your first hamster but please keep in mind that a bin cage needs a meshed lid. Air holes do not suffice. I also add a window and back vent.

You are probably looking at around £50 in total providing you have the tools to convert a storage box into a hamster cage.

I hadn't noticed that either Beryl :) There are other cages you can get for a dwarf hamster as well - but a bin cage probably works out the cheapest.
