Tino's thread

Sorry to say no photos. It was a lovely girl hamster called Gold.

I had a phone in those far off days (2008 or thereabouts) but it wasn't a smart phone!

Tino had quite a long time free roaming last night and was up to his usual perky things, rummaging, banging noises. He has a few routes. He starts off heading under a chair towards his cage area which is partly under the stairs and darker and a few box files etc to rummage around. From there he comes out at the foot of the stairs and heads along the end wall near the skirting board, and goes behind the TV cupboard. He spends quite a while behind there making banging noises (there is a box of all sorts behind there and I think he rummages in the box. Raffy used to do exactly the same! He then comes out from the other side of the tv cupboard, under the coal scuttle (currently not used) and straight across the hearth (also currently not used) and heads over to the board blocking off the kitchen. Investigates that (but has given up trying to dig under it), then heads behind the sofa on that wall. After that it's random. He eventually comes back to my feet in front of the sofa and investigages his familiar playpen toys. He seems to like to know they are there but really only sniffs them. Then disappears off. Last night after being out for an hour he actually came back to my feet and started meerkating as if to say - I want to come up on the sofa - or - I want to go back now. First time that has happened. Had him on the sofa for a few minutes and then back to his cage via his tube. Thought I'd add a few extra treats for him but as soon as I opened the cage door again he tried to climb out again ha ha. So no extra treats - gave up.

I’ll try but he doesn’t show up very well!

And most of the time he's out of sight! Behind or under something. Or at a distance and blending in with the carpet. But I'll try next time! I did get a video of him when he found that coat on the floor, because he stayed in one place for a while then!

He does love his adventures

Tino is starting to show some signs of ageing. He will be 2 years old in about 3.5 weeks time. I can't quite believe he's nearly two. He hasn't gone grey exactly but I did notice his face looking older a couple of times recently. And his fur is changing as well. Under his golden fur, his fur is black and you can see the black when his top fur moves sometimes. He now appears to have a couple of distinct black patches - I'm not quite sure if they have just changed colour, or if he's lost a bit of his top fur and it's the black fur showing underneath. It's almost like he's having a bit of a moult - which is possible. He wasn't in the mood for a cuddle, and actually a bit grumpier than usual, so I didn't get to inspect them much really, but there is fur there. Still at nearly two years old, he is bound to show some signs of ageing. He still looks very good for a nearly 2 year old.

He had his free roam and always looks zippy and excited when he runs across the tiled hearth (unfortunately I didn't catch that bit on video). But he was noticeably slower generally last night, with the odd burst of energy. I think he might have been a bit grumpy because Higgins was out first and he could probably smell Higgins on me and the sofa, but he wasn't his usual self. So I will need to keep an eye on him. Having said that he was out for quite a long time and enjoying himself. Just not in the mood for a cuddle.

It does look like his hair is thinning out a little bit. Good to see more of Tino, any plans for his birthday?

Busy Tino enjoying his free roam. Hamsters do love to cover lots of space ❤️ My piggies are the opposite, they get a bit insecure out of the cage and want to go back after a short while whereas Socks loves his playpen. The piggies are a bit like sheep, they mainly want to graze 🥗. Tino, how the time has flown ❤️ goodness! He is looking a bit older, but he is still a fine hamster 🥰

That is a good point as I sort of forgot last year and had to do it late - his birthday is early January and an easy time to forget about birthdays straight after Christmas and New Year. So I need to think about it now really 😊 He still has his mini forage box from his last birthday and he still loves foraging in it! I’ve got both of them one for Christmas so will have to think of something else for his birthday.

Tino says thanks all. I also can’t believe it’s nearly two years and it’s a little bit sad as he has been such a big chunky healthy gentle boy and he seems smaller and bonier - time for some soft treats and supplements I think.

Thank you. I’m rather fond of it too - it’s extremely ancient and threadbare in places! OH’s Mother got it originally maybe 40 years ago 😂. It was very good when new - 100% wool. Main reason we haven’t replaced it is the house is so old there is no damp course under the floor. The only reason it doesn’t get damp is because the wool carpet breathes (and it has wool underlay too). A new carpet 100% wool and wool underlay could cost £8,000 to £10,000! And there’s nothing wrong with this carpet - apart from two bald patches! One where it got walked on most. The bald patches don’t look great but they’re in the wrong place to put a rug over.
