The Winter White Hamster (Phodopus Sungorus), also known as the Djungarian or Dzungarian hamster, was first described as a mouse, by Peter Simon Pallas in 1773. The Sungorus name is from the Geographical region Dzungaria. In 1778, Pallas renamed it as Mouse Songarus and in 1912 Ned Hollister ordered the "Mouse songarus" to the genus Phodopus. In 1933, A I Argiropulo changed the name to "priority sungorus and determined the hamster as a sub-species of the Campbells dwarf hamster species, Phodopus sungorus.

Today, however, the Winter White and Campbells hamsters are considered to be separate species, with the Winter White being known as Phodopus Sungorus.

They originate from the wheat fields of Kazakhstan, the meadows of Mongolia and Siberia, and the birch stands of Manchuria.

In 1968, the first four hamsters were caught in Western Siberia and brought to the Max Planck Institute in Germany. They are primarily seen as pets in Europe, US and Japan.

The information is from Wikipedia and there is much more information in the link below, particularly regarding their fur and colour changes.
