I'm sure the vet will advise if it's resolvable or if anything else should be considered.

Have i told you the story of my dwarf Clarissa? It was very similar to Harley's so i totally understand how you feel. Neither you or your vet could have forseen this unfortunate outcome. You both had Harley's best interest at heart.
You hadn't. So sorry to hear that you've been through something like this as well.

Is there a PDSA in your area? Just wondering if they might help or advise on the next course of action if they have hospital facilities?

I’m so very sorry things have worked out this way. Things always look different in retrospect but you did what seemed like the best thing at the time & you had no way of knowing how extensive things were or what the complications would be. It is so very hard to deal with things like this.

It's concerning that her healing isn't advancing as well as it should be. As I'm sure you're aware, rats normally heal incredibly quickly. Are you able to schedule an appointment with a vet or nurse in the next 2-3 days? Don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can make all the difference. I'm wondering if there's something you're missing. Like an underlying problem.

I rescued Clarissa from a Habitrail she had never been out of at 3 mths old. She was a crazy girl with a real zest for life. At 10 mths old she developed a lump on her throat that grew fast and totally cramped her style. One vet suspected cancer after analyzing the liquid inside the mass. Clarissa had no chance of a half decent life with this mass growing so fast so i opted for surgery to give her her life back, even if it was only for a couple of months. Unfortunately, the mass was attached to her thyroid so the vet had to remove that as well and worse still, it had started to spread to her parathyroid. Clarissa survived the surgery but didn't recover. It was like she had given up. All she wanted was to get out of her hospital cage and back into her Hamster Heaven. I moved her back home where she wanted to be. The wound healed but the cancer had already done too much damage to her tiny body and she died 6 days post op.
Like you, i regretted putting her through surgery but it was her only hope. The vet did all he could and we both wanted to give her some more time.
I think that you are doing the right thing by giving Harley time with her friends and to make whatever time she has left as happy as possible.

I don't think it'd be fair to put her through anything more at this point. I think it's time to just let her have a last few days in as much comfort as I can provide...

We're planning to book her an appt for pts tomorrow, probably for a week tomorrow. We might have to do it sooner because she is in risk of her leg degloving, which of course would be an emergency.

I am really sorry to hear this. If you think she may be suffering or at risk of fairly imminent suffering, then an earlier appointment may be better.

I hope the appointment goes as well as it can go. I am so sorry you are going through this. I know how heartbreaking it is. Just know, it is the most selfless decision to put Harley first and you are doing the right thing.

I'm so sorry. The decision is never easy even though deep down you know it's in Harley's best interest. Given her state, the vets may advise a closer date. You gave it your all, I'm just sorry this is the outcome considering how hard you tried 😞

I’m so sorry. It’s always such a hard decision to make but when it’s their time the kindest thing we can do is help them on the way, you have & are doing your best for her.

Everything is going well with Harley having friends in the day. I was a little worried that after three weeks apart they'd not accept her but they are all happy being together. Ivy and Luna are dealing pretty well with the back and forth although once it gets to late evening Luna is itching to get back to the main cage to go about her usual evening business. Getting lots of extra treats when in the hospital cage is probably helping! Luna is going to be getting decidedly chonky soon but oh well, she is happy!

Harley here, rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. I have decided everything would be too peaceful if I weren't around to create mischief so I have been eating and drinking and taking my medicines so that my wound slowly heals. My sisters are being good friends in the day and it isn't so bad being alone at night when I know they'll be back the next morning. I still dislike antibiotics and having my wound washed but every day I feel better and am enjoying being able to rat again.

Brilliant. I'm so glad you're starting to feel better Harley!
