Hi we are new owners (2days) and are mainly leaving our new addition (Professor von Nibbles) to settle I tried to complete a daily spot clean but can't find anything. He is in an omlet cage with 10" bedding at one side with the multi chamber house part buried so the top exit is level with the bedding and 7" depth at other side - he has 2 other above ground hides, log, play areas, wheel and sand bath. I think he might be peeing in his buried multiroom house but no idea how to spot clean do I lift it out ? am worried about stressing him. His bedding is a mix of aspen, soft paper, beech chips and meadow hay
Any advice ?

Hello and welcome :-) Such a great name, Professor von Nibbles :-)).

Honestly don't worry about spot cleaning yet if it's only 2 days :-) Spot cleaning is "as and when needed" basically, but for the first couple of weeks it's best to leave everything alone while they settle in. Changing things around or cleaning can really stress them until they have developed a feeling of security and scent marked it all. However yes, the pee does need spot-cleaning at some point. If he uses a litter tray you would maybe empty that once or twice a week, but he is probably peeing underground somewhere at the moment. But the rule of thumb at first is- if you can't smell it, don't worry! Because with so much bedding it will be fine and he is probably sleeping at one end of his underground hide and peeing at the other end. So I would wait a while, and in a couple of weeks, check the underground hide area. Maybe when he's out of the cage for a while so it doesn't freak him out :-). After two weeks is also a time to think about offering him a "taxi" for out of cage taming time/playpen time if he hasn't being pestering to come out before then. until then you could start with talking to him through the cage and offering him treats through the bars I'll let him get used to your presence and scent. It can be a bit skitty if they come out of the cage too early - they're still making it home and marking it as a territory and getting used to it. It's time and patience a bit at the beginning which is quite hard when you want to just pick them up and cuddle them But it depends on his personality some of them are very friendly and wanting to kind of come to the door earlier than two weeks:)

If he's a baby hamster they don't always develop the best toilet habits until they're a few months old But once they've had the P Spot cleaned it does tend to make them have better habits because they don't like their sleeping area being disturbed at all!

When you do come to spot clean if you find he has pee'd on his hoard (if he's actually started hoarding yet some of them don't learn to pouch straight away) then that is tricky. Dried food is hoarded can be left for really quite a long time, but if it has been pee'd on then that does need removing when you spot clean his pee generally. However this can make them quite frantic if all their hoard is removed and they feel invaded and a thief has been around! So the key is to leave a tiny bit of food behind that is dry If you can find two or three bits that are still dry, and also put a handful of new food back in the same place. They accept that as long as there's still some food there in the hoard :).

Have you seen much of him yet?! :) It all sounds very exciting it always is with a new hamster but it but we worry at first And then it becomes easier :) Just rely on your nose at the moment, when you don't know where he is peeing.

In time Some hamsters are very good at cleaning out their own peed on substrate. They don't particularly like having it sitting around So you if you leave it sometimes you may find a big pile of smelly substrate out for you to take away! They pull clean stuff in and push the dirty stuff out. but baby hamsters can take a while to get into these habits.

If you can smell pee before for a couple of weeks Is up, Then you could just put your hand under the bedding and have a feel around. But sometimes you can't find anything. which is OK because it probably means he's only peeing in one really small area And once you know what that is you know where to go next time.

Does he have a sand bath? sometimes they start using that as a toilet. But usually if they have a house with rooms they will use one room for sleeping and one for peeing in.

I have attached pictures of his cage the twigs were standing up but he's knocked them down twice so he wins- the first day he took all the food out of his dish into his house and hid it somewhere yesterday he only took the small (ear sized) piece of broccoli and left the food. We haven't seen much of him but he comes out at night and in very cute running around in the dark. We have ordered millet sprays and we buried some log bridges originally to keep the bedding deeper at one side but when we do a full clean will remove these and just bank the bedding and add these to enclosure. He seems to like the log tray as he snuffles in there and loves the wheel and reptile log. There is a sand bath he doesn't pee in it yet (I have sniff tested it). We also have this tube but didn't add it as was worried out the coloured bits. We also have the omlet play pen for when he is comfortable with us.

It looks great for him :-) Lots to do in there. the coloured tube is fine but I think it would be best used out of the cage because it looks like a good taxi! I use a tube about that size for the hamster to walk into Sometimes with the smelly treat at the far end to tempt them in And then I carry them to the playpen with one hand over one end of the tube the other end of the tube against my stomach :) Because they do tend to push at your hand a bit and try and get out. Just when transferring to the playpen. It's still fine to use in the cage but he'll probably pee in it!

did you say he had an underground house? They do tend to like the houses with rooms And so he probably would use that. One thing you could do in a couple of weeks is make the odd tweak by means of having a multiroomhouse on top of the substrate, that and he'll probably use that and just burrow down underneath it. So then you'll have a good idea where he's sleeping and where he's peeing and it should be easier to spot clean. The omele cage usually comes with the cardboard multi room houses and they can just sit on top of the substrate and don't need any legs or stilts to support them. Although they do take a fair bit of space but it might let make life easier. Basically they like to sleep/nest somewhere dark And they like to bury their hoards under or near their nest and burrow down a bit. a multi room house tends to have a dark room inside because light doesn't go round corners. If there is no house that's dark inside they tend to just Burrow under the bedding. Although hamsters vary and some will do one thing and some will do something else. I find if they have a multi room house they do a bit of both. As in they may use the house for sleeping but burrow underneath it But it keeps everything in one area or an area that you can easily access. Or they may just Burrow underneath it and use it as a porch! ie a secure roof over their heads when they emerge from their burrow:)

He might appreciate some deeper bedding at some point. Maybe 8 to 10 inches at one end, but for now while he's settling in and until you know where his sleeping and peeing habits are It's probably fine as it is:)

He's a lucky boy having an omlet playpen as well :) they are great , I have one . Having said that if you're initially doing some socialising and hand taming until he gets used to being handled, it can be good to start in a smaller area as they can feel a little bit overwhelmed by the space at first. I tend to start in the bathtub for maybe three to four weeks and then transition to the playpen . On the other hand if you use the playpen straight away it's big enough for you to sit in and he can get used to you by climbing all over you and you fill up some of the space !

In the dry bathtub, I have a fleece blanket on the bottom (and the plug in obviously), and maybe a carrot cottage (they like nibbling those), a tunnel (eg the coloured one you transported him in :-) A chew stick of some kind and I put a spare wheel in as well. If you have one - and maybe another small hide. But it's best to have separate playpen items and not take things out of the cage, as that can fluster and confuse them if something that is from their cage, and smells of their cage, is in the playpen.

It's a smaller cosier area and I start with hand feeding on the palm of my hand in there. And gradually they start eating from your hand and then putting a paw on it or even sitting on it, and then you're partway there to them being easy to pick up and handle.

Although maybe he's already tame and handleable?

Ah yes I can see it now! I thought that was a tunnel :-) No, one is fine - no need to change the layout to add a second one. So he's probably sleeping in there and peeing underground somewhere near there but I'd give it a few more days and see if you can smell anything :-) I just edited my post above a bit :-)
