Should I add a top hole to diy peep shed?

IMG_7490.webpI need some advice. We‘re making our own version of the niteangel large peep shed to out of wood be used in the corner of our hammy‘s enclosure. It will butt up to the corner so we’re going to put a hole in that chamber at the back. We‘ll have a hide on top of it in the corner and I’m thinking we might want to put an exit/entry hole on top of the second chamber as shown, in addition to the side hole. My partner thinks it might feel bad for him to have a hole over his head. Right now my hammy likes to burrow in this area and sleep so I’m trying to give him easy options to get into his nest from above like he does now.

They do like to have a really dark, secluded inner room to make their nest in for sleeping, so it might be better to have one of the chambers with no holes in the outer walls and the option of covering the front during the day to allow him to sleep undisturbed. Good luck with the project, brilliant idea 🐾🏡

I think a hole in the top at one end is a good idea :-) Like the multiroom houses. As long as it's at one end - as that means the other end is still darker :-) If it's not dark enough, hamsters just stuff up the hole with bedding anyway when they're down there and then shift it when they go in and out. If you had a hide over the hole as well it wouldn't let light in anyway :-) Light doesn't go round two corners.

I love seeing hammy heads popping out of top holes and they love diving down a hole 😂
