This is Princess Persephone. Goddess of the underworld. She's living up to her Sunday name and digging lots of burrows, but prefers to go by Saffie. She is six weeks old and we've had her a whole four hours. She's filled the hamster shaped hole in my heart.

Oh she's gorgeous :-) Such a sweet little baby. And she has a lovely home to enjoy.

Aww Saffie looks like one of my previous Syrians, Chaos. Hope Saffie has lots of fun adventures with you xx

She had lots of adventures last night. Tried to rearrange the enclosure, move bridges, dig up sprays etc. My decoration skills are clearly not up to much.

Aw I had a female cream banded hamster called Harvest. She was very lively.

Look forward to seeing more of Saffie as she settles in.

So this evening Saffie got up around 8pm and started the serious business of digging around under her multi chamber house. Then after a good 15 minutes came out and started on the equally serious business of digging a tunnel under the sand bath platform. I know this because she disappeared under one side and emerged a while later from the other side. She was less than impressed to see me when her nose emerged, and disappeared again straight away. It's clearly very important this tunneling, and not to be interrupted.

She is so different to Hamlet. He was not the least bit interested in digging tunnels.

She sounds like an active little lady :-) I'm so glad you have her after losing little Hamlet.

I am hoping she is as happy to get to know us. We are leaving her for the first week. But will try to start tempting her to take treats from us next weekend.

Quick question.. I've given her 1tbsp of science selective pellets. All of which she has now squirreled away. Then she's getting one TSP a day of getzoo Syrian mix. Does that sound ok for a baby? I was planning 1tbsp of science selective pellets a week plus the daily getzoo. I would start to scatter feed the getzoo once she is a bit more settled.

It's ok - I think most people would give a tablespoon of the muesli mix and just a few science selective pellets, but doing it this way, you're still giving her foraging :-) By the way, check out the food mix thread, as the Mixerama Syrian food is now available in the Uk (thanks to @Yorkie for pointing that out).

So Saffie was randomly up at 10am this morning. Whenever she sees us she stays really still. I am guessing she is scared? She doesn't run to hide though so I guess that is good. We are currently leaving her be but planning to try and see if she will take food from us once we have had her a week. I hope we can persuade her we are friendly!

I think Maz said that hamsters have poor vision in the day time. Perhaps staying very still is part of that, to see you better. I wonder ❤️

It's just an instinct really, particularly when they're babies - they're scared of all sorts! So not particularly scared of you, but not quite confident about certain things yet. It can take a few weeks for them to trust you gradually and be familiar with surroundings. I've had a hamster freeze on me that I've had for a while, and during the night as well - sometimes I think they have heard some noise that we can't hear.
