Safe and Unsafe Hamster treats

I'd be cautious about giving a pistachio in the shell because the shells are very hard, so it's unlikely a hamster could chew through it. But if they do chew it, a pistachio shell tends to shatter into sharp shards which could be dangerous.
Thank you 😊

How do you all feel about giving hamsters unsalted raw walnuts in the shell?

I’ve always given a bit of pistachio out of the shell, I think the shells are unsuitable too, unsalted ones can be hard to find sometimes but they are available.

I also crack the walnut open and give a half in the shell which they enjoy. There's a video on Bernard's thread where he tries to get the very last bit out of his walnut half. I don't think they'd crack open a whole walnut.

Asda does a good range of unsalted nuts incl pistachios at only £3.50 for 2 bags!

I tend to get the supermarket bagged nuts (from the bakery counter) as well - they're human grade. It probably doesn't make a lot of difference though and the bags aren't very big sometimes - but then they don't get used up for some time. Plain cashew nuts are popular here too. Our Syrian gets a whole one and Pip the Robo gets one split in half (they are easy to split in half).

Can someone please recommend me recipes to make my own hamster treats? I would love to give Puchi some treats and make sure they are healthy for him.
Also, I wanted to ask if I can give him dried chicken skin or is it bad for him?
Thanks🐹

There is one on here - I'll see if I can find it :-) Dried chicken skin I'm not familiar with - is it salty?

These are some I made - I used some little silicone moulds, but that's not necessary - you could just make them into little tiny mounds before baking.

I've linked the page below with the recipe and photos on, but these are the ingredients:

It’s 2 tablespoons of oats
2 teasooons pumpkin seeds
A level tablespoon broken walnut pieces
Half a finely grated apple
1 egg beaten.

If wanting it without fruit I guess you could use grated vegetables instead or just leave it out.

Cooked them at 170 degrees fan for about 20 minutes

I tried some today and it is crunchy (if it is toasted well), a bit chewy and only a bit salty. I didn't add anything tho, I just put the chicken skin on my electric oven until it seemed crunchy enough and then I left it to dry. I don't really know if I should give it to him tonight. I personally didn't like it, but that's because I am not a big fan of chicken skin. I don't know if he'll like it. Should I give it to him?

Is it a bought product you can check the ingredients of? I think anything dried will have some kind of preservative - maybe salt. Salt isn't good for hamsters so I wouldn't risk it personally. If it's just dried skin from a chicken you've cooked, it should be ok as long as the chicken was plain cooked with no sauce, salt or spices (ie plain roasted), but if that's the case he'd probably prefer a tiny bit of the chicken!

Sorry I didn't specify that I made it myself 😭. I was cooking chicken and before cooking it I took the skin off to try making for him. When it was dried I cut it into 2cmx2cm squares to portion it better.

Ah ok, so if you made it, you know if it had any added salt :-)
