As a first time hamster's owner, I want the best for Polo. Roast my cage so I can improve it.

It looks good to me :-). Although I would add a platform at the opposite end to the house. It gives them something to sit under and climb up onto - and they seem to like going up onto a platform. It’s also a good place to put heavier ceramic items so they’re supported.

As you’ve got quite deep substrate, a platform legs would need to be quite tall. Getzoo make some really good ones in all kinds of shapes and sizes but the max height is 21cm - would that work?

I’ve seen some tank style cages with a racetrack style of platform that goes along the whole back length.

I might add one or two extra floor toys as well - maybe a coconut hut or other smaller hideout.

You could also maybe put an additional ceramic hide on top of the house roof maybe. Are you scatter feeding? I usually put a food dish on the house roof.

I wouldn’t make any changes yet though and let him have two or three weeks to adjust and settle :-)

Yes, I'm scatter feeding. I agree with you, I need another platform. I was thinking of doing it myself, because it's quite difficult to find platforms that are tall enough.

Which country are you in? In the UK a company called Fury Naturals make platforms with longer stilts but making your own sounds good. I think everything looks nice but perhaps a little more enrichment such as grapevine wood, sprays and forage. These things also help to create a bit more crowding which can help a hamster feel safe.

I really love that you have asked for opinions and want to do the best for Polo. :)

I can see you have a platform under the wheel now :-) He will like that - a hideout under the wheel. Honestly it looks very nice for him as it is - I agree adding some sprays might be good. Another platform might be good at some point. The good thing about platforms I think is whatever is at that end already, can stay where it is and it's just under the platform.

I bet in two weeks though, he will be having a whale of a time in there, just as it is. Some Syrians settle quicker than others, but I've usually found that by 10 to 14 days they are happy and confident in their cage and really enjoying it - once it feels permanent and familiar.

I really love the teapot in the sand bath! It's hard in the first few days - we want to see them and play with them and have to be patient!

It looks good, I love that teapot too!
Agree with Rainbow though that it needs more in the way of enrichment sprays, maybe another hide or tunnel & the grapevine wood is a good idea too. Don’t be afraid to fill the space, they need lots to do & explore as well as enough cover to feel safe.
