Pete had his first taste of roast beef today he absolutely loved it he's definitely not a veggie he loves chicken too both plain cooked any suggestions as to how best to freeze tiny portions please and is once a week about right because if I let him he would love to eat meat every day which I suspect would be to often

Yes it would be a bit too often :-) As an occasional treat though it's nice! I'm not sure how to freeze tiny portions. Maybe the same way as normal freezing? Just in a plastic bag. Personally I'd be a bit concerned about freezing and reusing the cooked chicken. When I researched this for leftover turkey breast slices, the information was you just let them defrost and can eat them but I wasn't happy with that, so recooked them.

I agree it would be a bit too often, I know it seems a shame when they love things like that but it should be quite a rare treat really.
Being an almost life long veggie I don’t have a clue about what to do with meat but maybe just give him a tiny piece whenever you cook it if that isn’t too often rather than freezing it.

That is what I do :)

I bet it was a lovely treat for him! My old hamster Bramble used to like a bit of roast beef sometimes when we were having it. But I'd agree with the others than every day would be too much. It's difficult to freeze hamster-sized portions - they really don't need that much, just a piece about the size of their ear - so I tend to just give them a bit of meat or fish if we are having something that would be suitable for them. You can also feed plain salmon, white fish, even tinned sardines or tuna as long as they're in spring water not brine, oil or any sauce.

When it comes to safety, every time meat either thaws or cools down, it can potentially grow toxic bacteria. That's why you can only reheat food a certain number of times, even if it's heated to piping hot every time, and shouldn't keep thawing and refreezing things. It's generally safe to feed meat that's been cooked, quickly cooled and frozen once, then thawed but the risk is further reduced if you heat it again thoroughly. Personally I also prefer to only give meat (and egg) when the hamster is already awake because I don't want it sitting in the cage growing bacteria for too long.

I do not know if this is of any help but I used to buy freeze dried chicken or salmon on Etsy to feed. My past hamster really enjoyed them.

Thank you for the replies decided not to risk freezing not worth risk especially as he can't have it very often we rarely have the beef eat chicken more often when it comes to salmon I'm dead common only like the tinned stuff sorry Pete😊

It will keep in the fridge for about 5 days so maybe he could have it twice in 5 days until the next time :) I tend to give it as an out of cage time treat as they then sometimes nibble what they want and leave the rest. I was always worried they'd pouch it and I wouldn't be able to find it in the cage.

Thank you for that I'm sure Pete will be delighted I gave him the beef in teeny tiny bits and watched him devour it then he meerkat his Oliver act "please mum can I have some more " but I spead it out over quite a while because I was loving the attention I got he then went into his playpen no hiding it in his cage crafty mum👍😀

Davy has a bit of boiled egg about once a week. Then most Sundays we have roast so he has a bit of chicken. Haven’t tried beef yet! We do have a beef roast but didn’t even think to give him some! Bad Hamster Mummy 🥹x

Maple used to love a teeny bit of roast beef- we don't have it often but at Christmas he used to get a teeny Christmas dinner (the tiniest bit of beef/mash/veg imaginable and he absolutely loved it 🥰) haven't tried teddy with meat yet and charmander turned his nose up at it lol (but liked freeze dried chicken) 🥰
