Rio’s Mum

Things were quiet with the renovations next door and so I decided Rio‘s deep burrow area was getting a deep clean today. I’d been doing spot cleans and replenishing but I had never totally emptied it. This is also the first time he has been out of his Detolf cage so I was pretty stressed! I bought a Savic cage as his ‘holiday home’ and transferred him via a Guinness Glass taxi … effortless, he walked into it and ate his treats, then walked out into his Holiday Home. I thought he would bolt for cover and hide but he had other ideas and every inch of this cage needed explored, right now.
He has a ‘beach’ area in his Detolf where he bathes and wee’s so I put a little glass dish full of this sand in the Savic so it had his scent. He was straight in there digging and shovelling.
I am really amazed at my little Rio as his deep burrow area was bone dry and his main stash of food was in his HamCave (I put half of it back, with some old bedding so it has his smell). He will need to make new burrows but that will keep him busy for a while.
Although I’ve never handled him, he takes food and treats from my hand daily and accepts me stroking his head and back when eating a piece of walnut. When I transferred him back to the Detolf he walked from the glass onto my hand and then stepped off and went exploring again. It’s only his daft Mum who seems to panic 😱 but I am so proud of the confident little hammy he has become and he seems to take everything in his stride. 🐾

Aw that sounds great :-) He sounds like a very relaxed happy hamster. I do think they tend to keep their pee away from their nests and sleeping areas. If he has these good habits, it means you don't need to worry about doing main cleans too often :) What a clever boy mainly using his sand. Looking forward to seeing the video!

I’m having trouble downloading it I’m afraid.

Ha ha - you've actually captured the sand flying out there as well!

Seems to me hammy are as individual as the humans who love them Rio sounds pretty chilled despite the moves

Great to hear how well little Rio is doing & I so love that photo! 😍

Rio sounds lovely and he's lucky to be living in a detolf. At least you know now that he's a tidy hamster who pees in his sand and keeps his burrowing area dry which will save you a lot of cleaning.
