Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

I hope so. I have him a little stroke and cuddle last night. He is just out of routine but will soon be back on routine again. He’s feeling a bit boney, as older hamsters do.

He'll be back to his usually self soon, even being a bit grumpy won't get in the way of free roam.🙂

Yes I think so :-) He looked hurt and aloof!

They get really close to you! Still, it's necessary unfortunately in case he gets ill.

I'm sure he will soon forget and enjoy his usual routine they do express their displeasure in various ways don't they

They do indeed Jain. Raffy is very good at making me feel hugely guilty! It's a compliment really that he missed me.

My first hamster Alice used to have a real sulk if I had been away…my parents used to have her for me, but because they had a dog, Alice had to go in my old bedroom. It was a bit quiet for her liking! She’d have a right huff and turn her back on me when I got back! I’m still astounded that such small animals have such huge personalities and strong minds lol

It's wonderful isn't it, that they have such strong personalities and feelings :-) It makes me think of that line from Horton Hears a Who (Film). "A person's a person, no matter how small" :-)

Raffy was nipping about in the living room tonight looking very perky and active again :-) Tino wanted to be out at the same time again so he went in the bathtub.

Here’s Raffy from last night. He’s about 2 years and 4 or 5 months now. He seems fine and well and active although feeling a bit bony so he’s getting the odd supplement now. Must check his teeth soon but he’s always on the move!

And here he is tonight.

Great photos...each of them a winner in the photo competition I reckon 😍

Raffy says thank you Daisy :-). I'm aware he's a bit scrawnier but he's still just as active out of the cage. I think he was a bit peaky after we all had that awful flu bug that went on for weeks. Thankfully neither of the hamsters caught anything but Raffy did get left to his own devices for a while and out less and I think maybe pined a bit - I felt guilty about that but just wasn't up to late nights. I'm trying to make up for it now.

Raffy is definitely starting to show signs of ageing. Well he is almost two and a half. His back legs aren't quite as strong as they used to be, but he still enjoys free roaming, even if a bit slower. The other night he kind of got his own back for being left without out of cage time for a while when I was unwell. And disappeared! Showing me not to take for granted that he comes when I call! I waited and waited and looked all over the living room. Called his name a few times. Nothing. There was no way he could have got out of the room. I waited about half an hour. Eventually I decided to do some rustling in his cage (his house needed sorting out anyway) and stop trying to call him and find him. I sorted his house out (the bedding under the house has all been pushed out to one side leaving big gaps under the house so it's not easy for him to climb through the doors!) Sat down again. And he suddenly appeared from round one end of the sofa running towards me and looking at me and waggling cheerfully and looking happy. Cheeky tinker worrying me like that. But point made. Ignore me and I'll ignore you and don't take me for granted.

He's been having extra special attention now things are a bit more back to normal though, and is getting a bit of raspberry and strawberry porridge every night on a teaspoon. The first night he grabbed the teaspoon and held onto it and ate the porridge sitting up holding onto the teaspoon. Last night he just licked it from the teaspoon, but grabbed the teaspoon when the porridge was all gone - maybe in case some more appeared!

As he'd seemed a bit slow free roaming a few nights ago - and his back legs are noticeably not that strong, I thought maybe he'd enjoy sofa time instead and set up a few hides etc on the sofa. He didn't really enjoy it and just wanted to keep getting off the sofa, once he'd pouched any food he could find. And he seems a bit more mobile again after the one off night. So we'll stick to roaming again for now.

The first night on the sofa he wasn't interested in anything except my empty tea mug! Which I had put down on the sofa (because the coffee table has the Aura cage sat on it at the moment! And was obsessed with trying to get inside my tea mug! So the next night, I got out the heart cup and put some treats in it and he was keen to climb in that. He needed a bit of a leg up with the back legs.

His fur is starting to thin behind the ears a bit now too. He's still his cheeky perky self but I think not quite able to be as gung ho as before. No more clambering in boxes behind the TV.

So he was back to normal again last night - following my feet if I went anywhere in the room and hovering around. Going off and coming back again.

Here he is on the sofa the night before last :)

And a short video of him in the tea-cup and eating everything he could see (except he ignored the cornflake :-)
