Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

I’m sure Raffy was pleased to see you really, just too excited to get out & have a run around!
Hope you had a good holiday.

Thank you :) Yes it was nice.

It’s reassuring that they are OK when left for a week ie withno human contact. We are going away for the weekend in October and can’t imagine my son would want to come as late as 9pm to feed Davy!

They weren’t exactly left alone as the pet sitter came in daily and chatted to them when she fed them (even though she didn’t actually see them!). The max you can leave them home alone is two nights really.

Ah sorry wasn’t implying you’d left them alone. My son wd come at 6ish. Davy is always asleep then!

I know what you mean :) As long as someone comes in to feed and chat for a few minutes I think they are aware there is still some civilisation going on!

Raffy is being a tinker tonight. He climbed into the coal bucket. Something he has never attempted to do before but someone had thrown a screwed up crisp packet in it. Raffy was after the crisp packet. Hopefully he won’t do it again now that’s been removed. He did have a good wash afterwards so I think he realised it wasn’t a good place to go. Shortly after that I heard rustling behind me. Somehow he had got over the fenced off corner round Pip’s cage stand - there’s a bag of substrate behind it which was the rustling I heard - on investigation I saw Raffy climbing out. And plopping on the floor. So clearly he just throws himself at it to climb over.

Glad he was okay, what kind of crisps was he after? They must have been choice to warrant such an effort :D

I have this imagine in my head now of Raffy climbing out of the bucket with a black face.

They were tortilla chips actually (empty bag). But they smelled of food obviously! Actually he didn't get black at all - except maybe the bottom of his feet so he's probably walked it all over the carpet. Little hammy black footprints.

Raffy is in full mischief mode now you’re back!
I can just imagine the little black footprints!

I didn't actually see any little black footprints :) They probably blended into the carpet! Raffy is clearly still very good at climbing up into things so I think I'll move it out of the room as it won't be used for ages.

Sounds like Raffy is full of beans now your back 😀 hope you had a good holiday.

I realised I haven’t really taken many photos of Raffy for a while. It’s been busy over the summer. And he moves fast at night! Poor Raffy has had to stay in his cage the last two nights. We had a mouse a few days ago. It was caught. We left traps for another night and nothing else. It was only a little field mouse and probably came in from outside, but they can carry diseases. So a major clean up in the living room the last couple of days. I didn’t want Raffy roaming again until it was sorted. And there isn’t another room I can let him out in safely.

Big job! It’s surprising how much clutter accumulates - behind the sofa eg!

And it needed a through hoovering everywhere. I still have one corner to do where there’s a load of stuff in an alcove Raffy likes to climb over and it’s the corner where the mouse went. So more shifting of furniture and other things before tonight and more cleaning in that area.

Last night Raffy was absolutely desperate to come out and I felt so mean. I could t even feed him without him trying to climb out. In the end I let him have a run around on the sofa. Which he did t like. He wanted to jump off but was too nervous (I’m sure he would do it eventually). Anyway at least he had about 10 minutes out of the cage.

I later saw him looking jealously across at Pip from the end of his cage when I was talking to Pip before I went to bed.

Poor Raffy - no free roaming, noisy hoover and then Pip getting attention.

During my clean up I had to move all OH’s box files and found the empty one that Raffy likes to go in, he has been using as a toilet! And a snack store. Full of hamster poops (they were definitely hamster ones) and he must have peed as it’s going a bit manky as well. So that has been binned. I might need to put a hidey place down there instead.

So that’s my Christmas clean done ha ha!

Oh no! That must take ages to clean everything after the mouse got in. It is lucky you were able to catch it.

That is interesting Raffy was using a file as his toilet. I think that is very clean not going on the carpet. 😊

That is what OH said - maybe we should leave it there in case he starts using the carpet instead! I might try and clean it out but it was starting to look mildewy.
