Photos not showing

Hi, not sure if this is an iPad thing, but most of the photos in the threads aren’t shown. I just get a little blue question mark. I’ve had it occasionally on other websites, where images don’t seem to load, but for some bizarre reason, I think it’s probably over 50% here. Anyone know what I need to fix? Thank you

I'm sorry to hear that. Is it just the home page photos? They are webp and I believe safari web browser sometimes can't see webp photos - it's an Apple thing - although later versions of safari don't have the issue.. Most photos on the forum - apart from the home page - tend to be jpegs.

However, they show up on my iphone. What version of safari are you using? Have you tried using a different web browser to see if it's the same? I believe you can install chrome or firefox on an ipad as well as the inbuilt safari.

I think you could be right, it’s the same on my phone. I’ve kept them up to date, but both are a few years old, so knowing Apple, I’ll be finding they aren’t supported anytime now. I’ll try on another browser and see where I get to. Thank you

I'm really sorry you're having this @Redheaddegu and we can try and sort it out by a process of elimination maybe Here are a few things to check

1) Try restarting the device (which you've probably tried)
2) Do you have a good internet connection or is it a bit weak?
3) Apparently there is a setting called low data mode - Settings - cellular - cellular data options - check that low data mode is disabled.
4) Also try clearing cookies and cache on the device.
5) Check you're running the latest ios version (ie it might need updating if automatic updates are turned off).
6) Are you using a VPN? (Virtual private network) - that can cause this too.

If your iphone and ipad are only a few years old, it shouldn't be that. If they were 10 years old it might be that. But with both you could just install Firefox web browser and see if it makes a difference However that could be annoying if you're used to just using the built in web browser.

Do you know what model of iphone it is and I could look into it a bit more

Also, is it all images in the forum, or just some, and it does it affect home page/articles photos as well please It might help me work out if certain image formats are involved

However, I'm not ruling out a web server issue either, so if anyone else is having the same thing, can you let me know? I use a fairly basic iphone and haven't had an issue, and also use Windows 11 without having an issue.

@Lovelyness what device did it happen on for you? I need to narrow down if it's device specific or an intermittent thing related to server side.

One other thought - did you accept cookies? Rejecting cookies stops videos showing up. But I don't think it affects photos. If you want to check, go to the bottom of the site and just above the forum logo on the left, click on "cookies" - it lets you set or change your options.

Hi Max, thank you for this, I’m sorry to be such a pain.

Nothing in your list seems to work I’m afraid. I hadn’t actually tried turning off, which is my usual go-to for most things (I remember control-alt-delete in the 90’s ), but no joy. Cache is cleared, I’m writing this on Firefox, and I’ve checked, and we are still receiving iOS updates, and I’m up to date. My iPad only uses WiFi, and my iPhone has the same issue. Cookies are accepted.

I’ve checked several threads. It appears quite random, even some very new (this year) photos aren’t showing.

It appears there has definitely been an issue with Apple devices for a while, although I couldn’t quite get to grips with whether it was just a safari issue, or an actual Apple issue, but this is the first time it’s been so bad.

Normally I can work these things out, with a little help from google, but this time I’m at a total loss!

You're not being a pain It might be something to do with the site and others might have it too - so I need to check with the server then and see if there is anything at that end. I'll start another post to see if anyone else has had the same issues. Do you only have apple devices to check the site on? If it does the same on, say, a Windows laptop on firefox, then it might be something to do with your internet. As I'm on Windows on Firefox and no issues! How are your internet speeds?

Could you give me an example of some of the threads please - just paste them on here. Then I can inspect the images and see if that gives a clue! There must be a lot of people using Apple devices though ................

@Lovelyness - what do you use? As you mentioned it had happened the odd time as well.
