Otto has been to the vet and she examined his eye properly. She put some dye drops in his eye to check it under uv light. There is evidence of a small injury or ulcer and she prescribed a 5 day course of antibiotic eye cream to clear it up. Otto injured his eye before i took him in and i'm pretty sure that he hadn't been taken to a vet or it would have cleared up.
I had an injury like that myself when i stabbed my eye on a sharp yucca plant while gardening. I saw the gp immediately and was prescribed an antibiotic eye cream as well. It was painful but healed up quickly aided by the cream.
I'm glad this vet was thourough and examined his eye properly even though it looked normal today.
Otto is quite a tolerant hamster and didn't get too stressed which is also good to know.

Sounds like the vet visit went well. That is a very good eye treatment. I hope his eye heals soon.

Thank you all. Otto is currently running around on the floor. I had to wrap Otto into a flannel to administer the eye cream without too much fuss.

It really helped to show the photos to the vet because Otto's eye looked normal at the time of the appointment.
I'd advise anybody to record any abnormalities and take photos there and then.

Otto enjoyed a long free roam tonight. He knows his name now and comes to me when he wants to go home. He is very tame and seems settled here. He's a lovely boy and similar in nature to Jack.

Otto weighs 175g now which i'm happy with. He's an average sized hamster and doesn't feel so lightweight and thin now.
It's too early to say if the eye meds are working. Eye was a little closed yesterday but i thought that it was the excess cream in his fur so gave it a gentle wipe and it opened up immediately. It didn't do that before when i wiped it so it seems to be improving.
Otto isn't bothered and has just been out for a freeroam. He's turning out to be a calm and tolerant hamster which is a great help when administering meds.

Otto has finished his eye treatment now so we'll have to wait and see if it sorted it.

5 days. I was thinking of adding on a day allowing for dosages slightly off target but will see how it goes. The cream keeps for a month in the fridge. Otto was starting to get fed up with being woken up in the morning and his eye is open.
