Obie's Abode

If you want something to still have tube attachments for playpen access, there is also this (it's only really some Ferplast models that have tube access). It's a bit on the narrow side but a good length and a good deep perspex base at the front. It's also a bit expensive, but that price does include the wheel. Robos need a while 8" diameter or larger. Shame the photo shows it with hardly any bedding in!

I do second.the Grosvenor Xl 100 for robos, the shelf is really useful, the bar spacing narrow, and the top access is straight forward and easy. We have Pedro in on and he has loads in there, plus really.deep.bedding
Thank you, @Yorkie !

Just seen your lovely photo of Obie in the photo comp. I just thought I'd better check if that is fluffy bedding in the photo? If so it's not safe unfortunately! Best removed.

PS. Do you think it would be safe for Obie to have 24/7 access to his playpen? Or can robos get into too much mischief when unsupervised?! 😜 I'm aware that hamsters can make escaping their speciality!
What a great playpen! I wouldn’t leave him personally (my last syrian could climb the mesh and get out himself!) and I would be too worried you would lose him. Xx

I used the natural fluffy stuff with my last hammy as didn’t know it was unsafe until I saw on this group. He was always fine and loved it but I haven’t bought anymore just in case.

Should have said I didn’t solely use that, I have always used a range of bedding (carefresh, paper etc) but it was in my rotation! X

Hi. So - it's advised not to use even if it's natural - in the Uk that is. Although it's natural it could still block the digestive system if some was pouched and swallowed, as it doesn't degrade in water. Which is the historical issue with many types of fluffy bedding and caused many hamster deaths.

In Germany they think it's ok because it's natural - so it's a different view. But the hamster community in general in the Uk has always said no fluffy bedding. There was debate about the cotton/kapok pods some years ago and the consensus was - still not safe - even if it's natural material - just like chewing or swalling any kind of material, it will cause a blockage. You would think hamsters wouldn't swallow it but they have done.

The only safe thing really for nesting is paper - plain white toilet paper torn into strips is best - it dissolves in liquid so wouldn't cause a blockage. Hamsters also do love a big pile of strips of toilet paper and they pouch the strips to take to the nest. They will pouch all sorts if it's available.
