What a funny and fabulous video!

Love that digbox and so does Norbert obviously. Does it have a solid base? Just wondering because i watched Norbert's tail disappear down a burrow. Is that coco fibre or something else coco? I've been looking to get some in reptile shops but am never quite sure which one is suitable for hamsters.

Oh my gosh this is adorable! What a fantastic digging area too.

I was wondering how you and Norbert were doing :-). It's a great video! He looks like a really large Syrian as well! Do you know how much he weighs? Probably best to wait till he's had his two weeks settling in time before weighing him anyway. As it would need to be during out of cage time. I use flatbed electronic scales with a treat on and they just walk on to them and sit and eat the treat, so you can read the weight and no man handling!

He is so excited about that broccoli lol! Just a tip - I tend to only give a very small piece - about thumbnail sized - with that sized piece they tend to eat it straight away. If they pouch a lot of it and hoard it then you need to check the hoard for rotten food! With a small piece they don't hoard it usually - it's small enough to be eaten straight away.

Norbert loved tackling that broccoli head - always a favourite I found!

He certainly did! Have you tried Whimzees? They love those as well. Mini version (they are vegetable based dog chews that are suitable for hamsters). I like the mini toothbrushes as you can stick seeds in the bristles. They often get very excited about those (they smell nice) and our Syrian runs around the cage with it sticking out of his mouth, excitedly, trying to decide on the safest place to hide it from intruders! He also does that with half a walnut - visibly shakes with excitement if he finds half a walnut!

Sorry for the late response Beryl, was having a heck of a time trying to type/text on my phone yesterday, so got my laptop out today which is easier for my dancing HD fingers lol! Right, Norberts dig box it actually a 28liter fish dank, its 12'' deep. At the bottom is an inch of megazorb, but the rest is well pressed down cocfibre, nothing else. You can buy this stuff in blocks, and just add water to break it down and expand it. But... then (in like a hamster's case) you have to dry it all out again in the oven or something. So this time, I bought the 'loose' cocofibre. It does work out a lot more costly, but then again, having your oven on for 4 or 5 hours drying a load of the other stuff makes it balance out really.
I've had pet land crabs in the past, so learned about safe tunnelling substrates from having them, as they can be extremely sensitive little beings, hence why I returned to the cocofibre again :) It holds tunnels fantastically when firmly pressed and norbert absolutely loves it! No dust at all, once his tunnels are dug out and formed he doesn't come out with all his fur clogged up and grubby neither. Anyway, hope this helps! <3

I don't think he is particularly big, but his hairy bum makes him look bigger! I would like to weigh him, mainly for his medical history notes for his veterinary records. He's still quite shy, but right now, Ive just had an idea.. If I put my small digital scales in his tank when he is scuttling around, he may just hop on them... Bob's your uncle! (IF he chooses to oblige, lol!) I fully agree about the broccoli, I didn't think at the time about how much that evil stuff can stink! I am doing regular sniff tests so hoping if it dioes start to rot before he's eaten what he's stored, I will smell it... I did remove the big chunk though after the video. (I throw a large, boiled chunk into my fish tank now and again as they love it, but oh boy, it HUMMMS the next day if they don't gobble it all down, and then it's a mega aquarium clean up! I will definitely try the treats you suggested, they sound a safer, less stinky way forward!

There's no rush to weigh him. I'm guessing he's long haired as he's so fluffy? I would wait till he's had a couple of weeks settling in or he might get stressed about it. They love a bit of fresh veg daily! I just keep to the small thumbnail sized piece because they eat it straight away then (and because I don't like poking around in their nest trying to find things that could go rotten!). Our first syrian used to regularly get a bit of meat, when out of the cage, and he'd nibble what he wanted and leave the rest - if we'd had a roast dinner, but I couldn't do it with our other syrians as they just pouched it! And the idea of trying to find a bit of hoarded meat going off was too grim. So they get a nut as a treat instead :) . There is nothing wrong with giving a larger piece of broccoli - they only eat what they need. I just thought he'd be hoarding it as he pouched so much lol!

Oh wow, that is some digging box. Thanks for the coco fibre link. It's the loose stuff i'm looking for. I tried the block but that's too much fluffing around and i couldn't get it right. Damp's no good and when it was dry it was too dry if that makes sense.

What a looker he is! Makes me yearn for another long haired syrian, had a few in the past and I just love them.

Great set up.
