I was so excited to see the new Omlet hamster cage had been released, far better than their previous attempt! With deep bedding screens as well! Then when I saw the dimensions my excitement dropped :((. 4928cm squared. Nearly there! 20% off at the moment.

It's not bad actually! Nearly 90cm long and a good depth at 56cm. And a good height for a Syrian.

What do you think of the size? Would it be suitable? If it was 2cm longer it would have the full 5000cm2.

The wheel looks a good size but doesn't give a size - maybe 11" - but it says it's silent. I like the deeper bedding perspex part of the base, and it has a front opening door! As you say, if only it was that little bit longer. It's bigger than an 80 x 50 cage though and only just shy of 100 x 50 (5000 square cms) at 4,928 cm.

It's £169 though! The stand is another £89. They do a fold away playpen that looks good but that's also £79 for the larger one. I quite like the compostable hamster hides!

The wheel is 26cm. It’s in one of the pictures somewhere.

It’s £135 at the moment. 20% off!

So only just over 10" wheel then. Fine for a dwarf hamster or baby Syrian but not for a fully grown Syrian. I just updated my post above :-) It's only just shy of 100 x 50 (which is 5,000 square cms) at 4,928 square cms as it's quite deep/wide.

I think they've been quite clever - they've almost reached the 100 x 50 standard but made it look an accessible size for the average home. Just annoying they didn't make it that little bit bigger and the wheel 28cm.

The price is ok with the 20% off but full price is too much for what it is.

I was considering it for pumpkin my new winter white but I don’t want to change his cage so soon.

Those compostable hides look just like the hide I made for Blossom for her play box from a box which had mushrooms in it which came with my organic veg delivery 🤔

It would be lovely. What cage is she in at the moment? If she's just settled it's maybe not good to move her.

Ha ha yes - they just look like egg box packing don't they - cardboard.

After my Bucatstate disaster the night before I was supposed to pick him up we went basic with the PAH habitat 3.

Well I guess I am not going to buy one.

A test product was measured and it’s a lot smaller than stated on the website.

If the bottom of the base is measured from the inside, it will always be a lot smaller than the maximum quoted dimensions. You could achieve the same thing with the Savic Plaza :) The Savic Plaza, if measured on the inside between the bars at the top part, is only 98cm x 48cm - but I think that's splitting hairs for a 100cm cage. If yoiu measured the narrowest part of the base at the bottom inside then of course that will be much smaller. Because bases slope in.

I don't like it when people say measure the narrowest part at the bottom of the base, because that would rule out virtually ALL barred cages that are considered perfectly good 100cm cages (including the Barney as well as the Savic Plaza).

There are quite a few people in the hamster world who really dislike barred cages full stop so will seek to knock them. There is a lot of unnecessary negatitivity and rumour about barred cages, without experience of using 100cm barred cages.

I couldn't actually see the numbers/measurements on those photos. What would have been more useful would be the measurements of the top part of the perspex - ie the maximum bedding area which would be the basic floor area for the hamster. That is what I think is the most important and what we have advised on here. Not to get all thought police about the narrowest part of the base!

I can see your point though that the PAH cage is bigger.

It's why we say "approximately" 100cm x 50cm on here because some people get very pedantic elsewhere on the internet. Even pet charities say "ideally" 100cm x 50cm. It's a guideline.

Well I did argue this on Facebook. If the bedding is up to the screen that is the unbroken floor space to run around in. So surely the measurement should be taken from where the bedding will sit. I was shouted at for this 🤣 This is why I much prefer this forum!

Yes Facebook groups can be very much like that - it can be quite brutal :) There is another Facebook group that says there are no ethical breeders, which excludes all the experienced and dedicated breeders in the National Hamster Council (who are keeping species alive like Winter Whites). Very black and white!

Sorry I edited my post above a bit :-) The measurements quoted will be maximum measurements but it would be interesting to see what the widest part at the top measures :-)

I’m going to come off of them I think. Being autistic I’m very analytical. The evidence behind 100x50x50 is picked as a compromise. As is 10 inches of bedding. The studies showed 10 000 sq cms still didn’t eradicate stress and 40cm depth of bedding didn’t either. I suppose the two options would be not to keep pets in cages or to do our best!

The Blue Cross recommends 8" of bedding :-) There are other places, including here, that say at least 6" of bedding but ideally 8" or more. On our bedding article we say at least 6" with a multiroom house, but ideally 8" or more.

That is still not hard and fast as guidelines aren't always appropriate if a hamster is unwell or has had surgery or has special needs :)

It's important there is a guideline though, to be clear small cages aren't acceptable. The "old" RSPCA minimum used to be 80cm x 50cm. Although 100cm x 50cm is about right, in my opinion, but the word "approximately" is important I think :)

Unfortunately much smaller cages are still sold and people still buy them and they're much cheaper than the Omlet.

The Ferplast Multipla range have similar issues. They look really good and allow for deep bedding but are under 100cm x 50cm - even though they have add-on capabilites they are quite narrow.

But if someone came on here with an Omlet or Ferplast Multipla that was not quite 100cm x 50cm it would be hard to say to them - you should upgrade, when the cage may be "adequate" :)

I'm tempted to get one just to measure it myself ha ha.

It's a similar idea to the Savic Aura 120, which is much bigger, and may be too big for some people to fit in. Shame there is nothing in between. The Aura isn't available anywhere to buy in the Uk yet but Zoar's Ark say they can order one in from Savic (but only when they do a stock order which could be a long time). It's available in other European countries though :-)

Shame there isn't something in between the Omlet one and the 120 Aura with a deep perspex base! The Aura has 6mm bar spacing as well. It is very tall though so needs the full 10" of bedding that it holds.
