New Hamster

It's only a little thing and it's sat on top of the house roof. I'm trying to decide whether to leave the bridge up to it or not. Without the bridge she probably won't be able to get on top of it. It's a roof over the water bottle rather than intended as a shelf :)

This might help show it better. It's very slightly taller than the bendy bridge next to it.

As I say, not quite finished yet - but I needed a photo for the rescue. At first I wasn't going to put a bridge next to the mini platform as it's a shelter over the water bowl rather than a platform. It's quite dinky :-) But then I thought she might try to get on top of it so put a bendy bridge next to it.

The cage looks amazing Maz!
Youve used every square inch.
The piece of cork is huge, it’s almost a platform in itself. Did you get from the website you linked?

It looks brilliant! The shell fits in so well and will be so nice for the hamster to dig in. I also really like the wooden cork log too. She is going to love the sprays. :)

Thank you! Yes MacKyen - I chose that piece thinking - hmm not too tall but wide so might make a roof over the sand bath as well as shallow climbing.

The shell is huge! It has cork granules in.

Strangely the photo makes that little platform look taller than it is when you look at it in real life :)

The photo does make the platform look bigger, photos are often a bit deceptive but it makes sense now :)
I’d leave the bridge there though.
Where did you get your cork granules from? I’ve been looking for some of those!

Well as you know I haven't had a Russian dwarf before so it might take me a while to guage various things with her as to what is an appropriate climbing slope etc! The cork granules came from Hopes Healthy treats I think - quite a while ago. I got two bags and had one left over. However they are very slow with delivery. I'm still waiting for a parcel that was due almost a week ago.

A lovely home for your new hamster friend 💕
Thank you Frida. It's looking like it might be another week before the adoption can take place so I have plenty of time to leave things in the freezer and tweak things a bit!

They also sell them on Amazon. :)

Yes I'm thinking of leaving the bridge there Elusive :-) Without the bridge I don;t think she could get on top of it though as there is perspex at the side.

They do and I got completely mind boggled on there as there were so many and I didn't know which ones were suitable or if all were suitable!

That is understandable. Usually hamsters can use some of the substrate sold for reptiles. :)

A lot of them are sold for crafting and model railways as well!

I saw some on Amazon but wasn’t sure how good they were, the model railway ones come in different grades or sizes but it’s not very clear so I wasn’t sure what to get, I’ll have another look soon.

Every ham is different & sometimes things do need a bit of adjustment but I really think she’s going to love living in there!

I was very happy with the cork granules I got - they come in brown paper bags of 100g. I think you need a bit more than one bag - depending on the size of the container.

Thank you! I will have to be very patient for the next 9 days or so!

Bedding. It took a full 70 litre bag of Fitch - and about a third of a bag of Kaytee C&C (the biggest one). Plus a few handfuls of natural Kaytee and Finacard. Which at least saves me having a big bag of Fitch hanging around! But it does get expensive in bedding these days, when setting up a cage from scratch. And the bags of Fitch aren't quite as big as they used to be when they were 10kg bags.
