My little companion, Hammy

Is it normal for a syrian to go to sleep outside of any nests after a long bout of activity? Shes been up a good 8 hours, after running, burrowing and digging in her sand box. Shes only recently stopped and gone to sleep behind her big hut.

Yes it can be but she will probably go back to her nest when she’s ready. Out first one used to run in his wheel, leap out and then flunp on the substrate in front of it for a while - he looked like he was sunbathing or chilling / then another bout of activity and more chilling She sounds to be having great fun.

I saw her do a couple of funny things yesterday, which cheered me up. After a long run on her wheel, she leaned out with her head hanging down and fell asleep. The other was when she was emerging from a tunnel, she got half way out, then just flopped down and fell asleep.

Just stood near the cage, watching Hammy having a go at a monkey nut. It's another thing I like about her. She's ever so gentle when she eats.

I've only had Hammy a few days, and she's doing so well. Every time I hear her, I go over to the cage and talk gently to her and praising her. For now, I won't do any bedding change until she's confident enough to come out and let me do it. I'm just going to let her do what she wants. She's been busy and I don't want to destroy all her hard work. There's little mounds all over. Holes where she's come out from a tunnel and a couple of little hollows in two corners where she relaxed.

It's starting to look like my little hammy, is going to be one of those hamsters who sleep in their burrowed out tunnels. Which kind of has me a little worried, because i have no way of knowing if she is OK. I just have this thought that she doesn't have enough air down there to breathe.

This may sound a little silly, but I've been watching my hammy burrowing most of the morning. In a way shes kind of getting me to help her layout the surface of her cage. I've been watching where she comes and goes from her tunnels, and where she struggles because one of her toys or hides is right above where she wants to come out, I move it to a different spot. Having watched the movement of the substrate as she tunnels, I now have an idea of the layout underground. What a little star :)
