Ralph the hamster

I seriously appreciate you guys so much, by the way. Thanks for always helping with this stuff.

So PR still doesn't really want much to do with us. The most I can get out of him lately is if I sit and chat at the cage he sometimes squeaks back. I can hear him coming closer and closer to his burrow exit, but he never comes all the way out. He still plays at night but doesn't love his wheel as much as he initially did - I think it might be too big? I've started leaving cucumbers in a glass dish type thing that would make an excellent taxi so he can get used to that.

Last night, I was watching the Ham Cam and noticed him coming out about 45 minutes after I left his room. I watched him wander around and then go to the area where his water and wheel are. He was walking from one area to another and I saw him kinda lurch and shake a couple of times and then go really still. It was pretty horrifying to watch. I RAN down there and he looked like he was stuck on part of the bridge, but when I gently moved the bridge away nothing was stuck. He stayed pretty still for a few more seconds and then got up and sniffed around. Obviously I was concerned he was sick or injured so I sat by his habitat and talked to him for about half an hour. He ran around a bit, sniffed out the treats I had left, sniffed me, ate the treats, let me pat his head exactly one time, and then ambled off to bed. I couldn't see anything like a limp or injury or anything that seemed wrong with him - did he just stun himself? Was he maybe caught on the bridge but got loose, and then froze when he heard me coming?? He came out again around 2 am and acted normal according to the camera but it was super upsetting to see him lurch and shake and look like he died :( He did run on the wheel on camera and gait looked normal - well, normal for him; he likes to run super fast and then stop suddenly so the wheel rocks him back and forth.

Aw, I am so sorry. That must have been very upsetting but it sounds like he was fine. If you wish to, you can upload the video on here for members to give their opinion. You can also upload a video of him running on his wheel if you would like opinions on if it is the right size for him. Sometimes seeing videos can help a lot. You just need to upload them to youtube and then post a link here.

I think it is wonderful he sniffed you and ate a treat you left him. To me it sounds like he has become used to you and is getting more comfortable with you. :)

The wheel won't be too big. Don't worry he probably just froze - he sounded fine afterwards.

Maybe I'll get promoted from Benevolent Overlord to Girl Who Didn't Let Me Die and Also Has Dried Papaya :)

Sometimes they can get spooked by something we may be totally unaware of, a sound we can’t hear or something like that, it does sound as though that may have happened.

I've observed that with my hamsters as well. They can get spooked for reasons unknown to us and then freeze.
I think it all goes back to being prey animals in the wilds where they freeze so the predator can't see them run giving them a better chance of survival.
