Mochi the Syrian hamster

We’ve all been there!
I’ll leave it to the Syrian owners to suggest the best house as I don’t keep them & I’m not sure.
In the mean time you could make him a cardboard house, something like a shoe box is a reasonable size, cut out the base & use the lid as a lift off roof & just make an entrance hole on one side big enough for him to go through.

12 weeks isn’t really a baby any more but still young & they can be a bit babyish for a while, he will still have some growing to do though

Those houses are really nice, I’ve used the smaller ones for my Chinese & they love them, I’m sure Mochi will too.
You can use the house as a platform & put things like food & water bowls & even smaller sand baths on top so you can double up on the use of space.
I was wondering how I’d fit his sand bath in too, so putting it on the roof is a great idea :)

Hello, welcome to the forum & congrats on getting Mochi.

It is a fairly common behaviour for hamsters to put things in the wheel but they do normally run with them in there.
If you would like to share a video you need to upload it to youtube (or another hosting site) & then post the link here & the video will show so we can see it.

Have you checked the wheel to make sure it’s spinning freely & easily, not to stiff or catching on anything?

What kind of house does Mochi have? It isn’t unusual for them to want to sleep under the wheel sometimes but if they have a good size multichamber house they will usually sleep & stash food in there.
If you’d like to you could post a photo of your set up & see if there’s anything we could suggest to help.

Here is a video of him running on the wheel. He does seem to be struggling a bit; not sure if it’s too big him. Would be great to know thoughts.

He looks fine to me. But I know what you mean - he stops and starts. It could be worth trying him with the 28cm version,

It may just be my poor eyesight but does the wheel touch the barred roof at all? It does to me when I watch the video. It may just be me though. Maybe you could press down the bedding around it to see if it spins a little more smoothly.

He is so cute. He has lovely colouring. :)

Thank you, I’ll try a smaller wheel for now then. I have a Savic wheel that came with the cage that I didn’t use, so I’ll swap it when I put the new house in so as not to disturb him too much.

No, it isn’t touching the roof, it seems to be the bedding underneath that’s slowing it down as he keeps going under the wheel as he’s burying his food there and sleeping there. Hopefully once he gets the multichamber house, he’ll stop.

Which Savic wheel is it? Yes I think he’ll stop hoarding under the wheel when he has a nice house :)

Lovely to see Mochi, he looks very cute.

Welcome to the forum. Mochi is a lovely looking little boy.
Mind you I am biased because a few years ago I had a lovely male Syrian I called Mocho!

He is such a cutie, thank you! Great name too 😁

Is the wheel possibly scraping against the side of the cage? I can hear a noise every time he stops running. It might be that he can't get enough momentum because the wheel is scraping against something.

Hi and welcome to the forum, Mochi is so cute. 😊

I’m sure he’ll love his new Getzoo multi chamber and will then no doubt sleep in it and start storing his food here 😀
