Morning all, I was quite shocked to find this in Bluey's sandbath this morning. I initially thought it was a piece of forage, but no, an absolutely giant amount of poo in one go. It is completely dry (well now, anyway) - really looks and feels like a bit of leaf.

He had a fairly substantial enclosure clean on Thursday which was our first proper clean since we got him 8 weeks ago, but yesterday he was behaving quite normally - out and about begging for food as usual. We did have to remove approx 30-50% of his bedding (basically anything that smelled of pee, really) but I was careful to keep as much as possible. He only toileted in his two burrows and we deferred going into them for as long as possible to keep his stress levels down since he's a biter.

We had, however, sweetened the deal of the clean by putting a few stems of flax in (which had been frozen twice). He gorged himself silly on it - the desperation with which he threw himself at it was quite something so we had to take the rest of them away. He didn't eat too much - maybe 8 or 10 seeds?

Yesterday whilst out begging, we gave him a piece of baby sweetcorn - slightly bigger than his ear, I admit, but not as big as two ears. Could it be that the corn may have caused this? Or the clean - or a bit of both?

He's in his burrow now but he looked and behaved totally fine yesterday. Seeking a bit of advice and reassurance here.... its terrible timing as we're going away for a week tomorrow and the neighbours are popping in to feed and water him and most likely won't even see him much let alone be able to do anything further if there's a repeat of this mega poo....
🙁
Anyone seen anything like this before? Thanks so much for any advice.

I haven't seen anything like that before but it suggests he's had a bit of diarrhoa and it's gone hard. Is it definitely poo? It looks like a bit of food at one end (the stringy end). It may well have been the stress of a cage clean - it can affect them when they're young. The main thing is it's not liquid. It can be a bit worrying if you're going away. All you can do is ask the neighbour to keep an eye on things and report if he doesn't seem himself. Or if there is anything else like that. Although he will probably hide away if a pet sitter is coming in - mine do.

Hi Maz, thank you so much - I've prevailed upon your expertise rather a lot this week! It definitely seems to be all poo - but my local vet very kindly offered to have a look at the photo to offer their thoughts too so am waiting for their response. Mister seems fine in himself still - came out begging for pumpkin seeds at his usual time with no lack of normal enthusiasm! So I'll see what is suggested. The poo is almost a 3rd the length of Bluey's body - it is absolutely massive in comparison with him!

I found something similar in Socks' cage once. I was at a loss to know what it was, but it did make me think of poo. It was very long and crumbly and dry. I wondered if something had gotten in with the bedding. He was fine and continued to take his veggies and use his wheel as normal. It did worry me at the time, but he was not bloated or hunched up, so I wrote it off as a mystery. It's interesting to see another weird poo turning up 💩🤔

Just chuckling at the thought of the vet looking at photos of poop 💩 😝 Hope hammy is all ok 👍

Yes, the poor vet! Grim job! She's replied that if he seems fine in himself it doesn't look like anything to worry about and wondered if there was a piece of thread he may have chewed and swallowed which has caused the pellets to clump together onto. I don't think so but if she's not worried, im sufficiently reassured! Sorry to foist that gross picture on you all!

That is a point - if he had chewed and swallowed something fabric, it could have passed through him.

It's better out than in, because if he had swallowed something like fabric, it can cause serious digestive blockages. Is there anything he could have chewed? In or out of the cage? It's why we always suggest paper nesting material.
