Meet CHAMS-DI AKA Cosmo!

Greetings and hello! I have been a lurker of Hamster Central, Hamster Hideout, and the Hamster Forum for a few years as I've had multiple ham babies in the past.
I decided to actually make an account and become more involved in the community with Cosmo's intro, my new 2 month old long haired Syrian hamster

I don't have a lot of photos of him at the moment since he's quite shy (Just adopted him yesterday!)
I love his little T-rex arms amidst his big floofy body




His full name is actually CHAMS-DI - Cosmo Halation Asteroid Meteor Shower Dark Infinity
....but you can call him Cosmo to keep it short and sweet

So far he's been adjusting to his new enclosure and exploring every inch which I'm really happy to see him do! *The second pic has the left side of the cage looking a bit empty because I had to make room for the carrier I had him in.

I do have a bigger niteangel hideout and another platform with another ceramic hideout and a cork granule dig bowl that I plan to add to his cage, but I'm wondering if it's best to just add them later once he's gotten more used to living in his new home.

Either way, super excited to become a part of the Hamster Forum!

Hello Cosmo! What a long and lovely name! He looks so cute with his black head and white body! I can’t wait to see more of him

What is his current hideout? If it’s not too disruptive to add, he might enjoy the larger Niteangel hideout. My boy Gus only had a large ceramic hideout but I followed my feelings to give him the Niteangel multichamber and he took to it immediately. Before that, he used to pee in his ceramic home but now he’s potty trained in the multichamber which makes him very clean

Yes, adding new furniture one at a time is a good idea, and giving Cosmo a chance to settle in in between. He has such a sweet face. He is a lucky boy to have such a great cage and good owner

Hello to you and Cosmo Agree I would just let him settle in at first, but adding new things is generally well accepted as long as it doesn't mean removing something they have got used to or moving other things around. Stability is the word! So if there is space and you have a nice Niteangel hide (and stilts presumably) you could just pop it into that empty space while he's asleep but I would wait a week as he's bound to be a bit skitty at first. Work out where everything is going to go first. If adding other things is going to mean a slight change around then I would leave it longer - 2 to 3 weeks. But adding one new thing he would likely enjoy After any change I hide a few treats in various places in the cage for them to "find"! Then it's a distraction from any slight worry the hamster may have.

It takes them a few days just to adjust to the new smells, new environment etc and to decide where to sleep and start a bit of a routine. They scent mark everything - partly to claim it as theirs and party to find their way around - so they have a little "route" and have mapped the enclosure. So that's why if things suddenly move to different places it can stress them a bit.

I learned the hard way about taking something out - my hamster at the time virtually had an apoplectic fit and got very stressed and made it well known he wasn't happy It was obviously something he liked! It's just familiarity as well maybe.

Thank you!! I can't wait to post more pics of him as well. His current hideout is a smaller niteangel I had from my previous dwarf hamster, 7.1"D x 7.8"W x 3.5"H (without stilts).

I'm glad to hear Gus was immediately smitten by the niteangel multichamber! I love using them (as you can tell haha). I will try to introduce the bigger hideout to him in 1-2 weeks! Where he tends to sleep is really close to where the stilts will approximately be in the bedding so I'll try to wait!

It's fascinating how hamsters have their own little routines and systems within the cage I think I'll wait after a few weeks to switch out the smaller hideout then because I would have to remove it in order to put in the bigger hideout.

I actually decided to add the sand bath platform yesterday and then the bigger platform today as they are pretty far from where he was sleeping. They were put in empty parts of the cage as well and he didn't seem to mind when I checked his pet cam. Really appreciate the advice!

Hi , I think your doing a great job, I like niteangel products! I have the niteangel large silent wheel for Teddy... He loves it they definitely have their own routines and as long as you don't go too mad at changing things they are fine about it. I think cosmo is a very lucky hammy to have such a caring owner Ness

Glad he accepted those things added He was probably curious to try them out. As mentioned they generally accept new things being added, but can get a bit upset if things are moved around.

Just a warning about the larger Niteangel houses for Syrians. The roofs are quite loose and not fitted - it's a known issue. With other multiroom houses from Getzoo etc the lift-off roof is securely fitted and can't move. The roof on the Niteangel house is also surprisingly heavy - the plywood seems quite dense and heavy. There have been some tragic accidents with hamsters actually pushing the roof up from inside and starting to climb over the top of the house - eg from one compartment to another or to climb out - and it falling on them. The solution is to either glue the roof down permanently (I know it's not ideal as it's not a lift-off roof then), or do some diy to adapt it with more pegs and better placement of pegs so it fits securely - and that is not easy - I gave up trying to do that. Even then it is quite heavy so I think the only safe way with those roofs is to either glue them down or have something wedging them so they can't be pushed up. For example I had the dwarf hamster multiroom in a barred cage with perspex panels and managed to site it so the roof was wedged under inner part of the bolts of the perspex panels so it couldn't move. But I could still remove it by moving the house slightly if I wanted to remove it.

Apparently Niteangel's advice on the topic is to put something heavy on the roof - but user reports are that this can make the situation worse in that the hamster can STILL push the roof up and then it comes down even harder.

Niteangel make some really excellent products but they have still not rectified the issue with the roofs on their houses as far as I am aware. It is the 3 room houses as well as the multiroom houses. Not sure about the others. Personally - I would glue the roof down.

I use the Happy Henry Homes multiroom houses now for that reason - the roof is very light and not easily pushed up - but I know they are not easily available everywhere.

Oh dear that's so scary I did remember reading about such an incident on the hamsters subreddit.

I will glue the lid down then, I don't want to take any risks It is the Large ver. of the 3 chamber hideouts.

Unfortunately Happy Henry Homes doesn't ship to where I am, but if I ever need to get another multichamber hideout I'll opt for Getzoo!! I was eyeing their ceramic hideouts before too

Yes it is annoying because they are good hides - but they still haven't fixed the roof! And they are the main option in the US. I have no idea how much Getzoo charges to ship things to the US! I hope it's not ridiculous. My favourite ones were the Rodipet ones but sadly they are no more.
