Hi hi, my name is Stan, 26, from Germany.
My current hammy is a dwarf mix (although he seems to have more winter white in him) named Gou. Lil guy is presumably around 14 months old now, although his real age is unknown because he was a rescue. He has lived with me for 9 months now though.
Gou is quite the character. He likes to vocally let you know how he feels by chattering and squeaking either in annoyance or excitement, depending on the situation. One Friday evening he squeaked for two hours straight and, afraid of it actually being a cold or even developing pneumonia, I rushed to the vet, paid a hefty sum for emergency hours, and learned that Gou is a healthy, but silly guy. Also a vicious beast, as he hates human hands with a passion and will scream at and bite them if they try to touch him. Although, he has grown a lot more accepting of my hand actually. After having started to not bite and just sniff my finger the last few weeks, today was the first time ever that he just sat down on my hand and munched on a piece of salad.

He's the second ham I have, my first one having been a Campbell's Dwarf named Flü who sadly passed away at 26 months due to kidney failure.

Anyway, I like to always do a lil research about ham behaviours and see what other people's hams do, how they solve issues with them etc. I especially need that with Gou being a very difficult guy oftentimes. Like, currently he lost 4 grams in two weeks and I, being me, am already a bit worried, although his behaviour and looks haven't changed. So, I decided to become a part of this forum to do even more hampter research :P

Last but not least, here my favourite photos of Gou over the past months. (He did a coat change in winter and also came to me as a lil fatty, so he looks quite different in each pic)

Hi Stan, welcome to the forum!
Nice to meet you both.
If you have joined to do more research you have come to the right place. There are some very knowledgeable members who will be happy to help with any questions you have, and some great articles on all sorts of topics to help you provide the best care possible for your little guy.
Gou is a very handsome little fella, looking forward to hearing more about him.

Hello and welcome! Stan sounds a real character. I'll reply more tomorrow as I'm falling asleep!

Still here :-) I'm so sorry about your Dwarf Campbells that passed away. He was a grand age. It sounds like you're making real progress with Gou. We never know what past experiences they've had as rescues that could make them see hands as a threat but it sounds like he's learning to trust you. I think it's trial and error to see what works.

Hello & welcome to the forum 😊
Gou looks adorable & really does sound quite the little character!
I would just keep an eye on his weight for now & see how it goes, unless he’s had any changes in diet or things that are a bit stressful for them like the vet visit or big cleanouts it may well level off again, they do sometimes put on an extra bit of weight over winter & lose a bit in spring & summer so that might be something to consider too.
Some Russian hams can be a bit bitey with hands, I have found that most grow out of it although some are a bit territorial in the cage & continue to nip a bit if you put your hand in but are fine during out of cage time.

I’m sorry to hear of your loss of your little Campbell, it’s always hard to lose a ham but I think our first one always has a special place in our hearts & hits us that bit harder, he lived to a really good age though so must have had a good life with you.

Thanks everyone!

Yeahh definitely. As bad as I feel when seeing how scared he is of being handled, it is all the more rewarding and heart warming when you do see these little signs of the ham trusting you a bit more! It is interesting that he's such a polar opposite to Flü though, partially because of his experiences probably. Flü was so chill (and lazy) that vets were always impressed at how calm he was during check ups. Gou, on the other hand, makes sure they know how much he hates them lol.

Ooh that's good to know, thank you! Yeah I did plan on just waiting a week and then weighing him again. In winter he lost lots of weight with his coat change and gained it all back recently. Might be that right now he just finished all the pumpkin seeds he hoarded over the winter and now is back to just eating his regular food lol.
And yee, I think he might actually have grown out of biting now. At least towards me. Because now he mostly just sniffles my finger and maybe licks it.

That's really good he seems to have grown out of it. He clearly trusts you now :-)
