Leg stuck in bridge

It certainly is - many of us have wasted money on dodgy products! I tend to stick to ceramic, smooth wood, plastic, items made without nails and cork now.
So have I! The amount of things that I have had to diy and change it astounding! Pretty much everything you find in your average pet store it unsafe.

There is a great thread on here called cardboard creations :-) Things people have made from cardboard (some very creative ones and treats as well :-))

Here is the bridge in question :) The bridge was straight so that should be the size it was but obviously since they bend, they can be much smaller or bigger.
Thank you for posting this photo and alerting me to this danger with them I was considered buying one for Pete as an extra hide definitely won't be risking it now

These are fine - a bit small but still a useful little bridge

Rainbow bridge

You can also get things like this one (this Niteangel ones is a bit expensive but there are similar ones)

Bridge/house

I get these - but they only come in a pack now with two small shelves. Although the two small shelves are useful too. They are smooth wood bendy bridges so no gaps - and they can be screwed to the bars

I don't use the hooks to attach them to the shelves, as in the photo, as that can also leave gaps. Both the bridge and shelves can be attached to the bars independently without using the hooks.

Coloured bendy bridge

They look great I'll definitely be getting those! :)

They're not cheap buying the pack of three like that, but they do provide all the fixings - screws and washers etc and the holes are all predrilled so they're easy to screw in place. There are probably similar coloured bendy bridges as well.

If you live in or near a town, have a look in small independent pet shops. That's where i buy the coloured bendy bridges. I always inspect them carefully before buying to make sure that there are no gaps.

I wouldn't definitely take your hamster to a vet asap. Even if the leg looks better tomorrow or they can't do a lot to fix it, they can prescribe pain relief while it heals.

Best not to think about all the money we've wasted on unsafe hamster things that are classed as safe by pet shops. Chains are another thing that can trap and injure little paws.

There is an independent pet shop in my town that sells good hamster products but sadly there stock and supplies are very limited.

I'll be making an appointment for tomorrow as soon as they are open again. She is back sleeping now but seems to be comfortable and warm.

That's good to hear. Did her foot warm up a bit?

Hello and welcome to the forum. Just catching up on your thread. I hope all goes well for Bunni at the vets tomorrow 🐹💕

Hello and welcome, I'm so sorry to hear Bunni has caught her leg in the bridge. I hope the trip with Bunni goes well at the vets.

I have one of these bridges and it is difficult to keep all the gaps close together. I've literally taken mine apart to squeeze it all more compact, as you say so many poorly made hamster items. 🫤

How is Bunni doing?
Sorry for the wait! After I tried warming up her leg, it did actually start to warm up by itself. I took her to the vet yesterday and she was able to walk on it surprisingly well. Luckily, I had found her very quickly so no serious damage was done other that a sore leg that lost a but of circulation. She had a small cut where the leg was trapped so I've been given some antibiotics but the vet said that she should regain full use of the leg and, as long as the antibiotics work, be back to normal in about 4-6 weeks.

Yes! I'm the future I'll definitely either stop using bridges, or getting ones with no gaps whatsoever.

That's really good news :-) Glad everything is ok. It sounds a sensible precaution to have the antibiotics rather than worse issues if the cut got infected.

Yes, thankfully it did! She is on the mend now and should be back to normal in about 4-6 weeks. Thank you so so much for all of your help and everyone on this thread's help. It could've been a lot worse. ❤️

Yes I am glad I have the antibiotics now as a precaution anyway!
