Hi all,
After some advice again for a worried hamster mum !!
Biscuit hasn’t been out of her nest for a few nights , I did think it was due to fireworks as they have been very loud . I checked on her this morning around 620am as she had not touched her veg which is unusual. I gave her some broccoli which she did nibble on. Just checked on her again and she is fast asleep and breathing like this , hopefully you can see on the video .. I am not sure if this is normal ..

I can't see the video unfortunately, but if her breathing has changed, especially if it looks speeded up or as if she is breathing heavily, she needs to be taken to see a vet. The change in her activity patter and eating suggest the possibility of an infection and she may need an antibiotic. I would ask the vet for an emergency appointment. I hope she will be OK. Wishing you good luck 🙏

Unfortunately small rodents are good at hiding health concerns, but you have observed issues really accurately and it does sound like a vet visit is needed ❤️

Hello. I hope you managed to get a vet appointment. I suspect if she hasn't touched her veg then she may be feeling quite unwell - I hope the vet can help.

To add a video it needs to uploaded to youtube, and then paste the youtube link in this (or rather your) message box. When you click on "post reply", the video will embed on here and can be watched directly on the forum. If you set it to "unlisted" when you're uploading it, then it can only be viewed wherever you posted the link (ie on here) and can't be viewed publicly.

We have an appointment at 430pm . She did nibble at the broccoli this morning but I am worried she hasn’t had any ester . I am so worried about her . I will try and post the video .

I took the lid off her house to check on her sleeping , her breathing was quite fast

That is really good she nibbled some broccoli. She could well have some kind of respiratory infection. I hope the vet can help - you may get given antibiotics.

I think you might have set the video to "private" in youtube rather than unlisted as it's not displaying :-) If it's set to private it won't show anywhere. If you go into the video settings you can change it to "unlisted" or "public" :-)

Thank you. We have just got back from the vet. When I took her out of her nest, she was still breathing very fast, but I noticed she had diarrhoea as it was all dried on her fur. The vet was really worried about her breathing and thinks she may have an underlying condition; as the swelling has come back. she has just had 0.16ml of antibiotics at the vets in case it's an infection, I insisted as the vet was not very hopeful that she will get better. I have to take her back to the vets if her her breathing is still laboured tomorrow as she will need to be put to sleep. The kids and I are so devastated...I hope by some miracle she can pull through. :-(

Oh I am so sorry. 🫂 I remember she had that swelling that disappeared again. How old is she? I really hope the antibiotics help.

She is about 19 months now.. A couple of days ago she seemed fine, and was chewing her log and relaxing in her mushroom.

So that sounds quite sudden. It did sound like infection and they can go downhill very quickly until they get antibiotics. Female hamsters can get uterine infections as well. Any infection could lead to diarrhoea. Did they give you a course of antibiotics to continue with? Or is that not necessary if she had a shot at the vets?

Poor Biscuit 😔 very sad for her family who love her. Wishing you all comfort 🙏
