Hi everyone! We lost our wee best pal Harry (golden syrian on the left) in December and got the lovely Shelby in January (dark/white female syrian on the right). I didn’t want a female to be honest as was concerned about temperament and Harry was very laid back however they were misgendered in the pet store (of course they were 🙄) and kids had already chosen her and played with her by the time staff realised their mistake. 🙈 Any good hamster owner will understand why we couldn’t ‘unpick’ her at that point. It’s a running joke that she was so desperate to come home with us that she tricked them into thinking she was a boy. 😂 She was a right show off from the get go and kids singled her out straight away. Anyway, fast forward a couple of months and her ladyship has just chewed right through the plastic base of her cage and very nearly escaped. Females are definitely difficult to satisfy! 🤪 Cage has been skipped and she is now in a temp space while we await delivery of the 3.0 which I’m hoping she will be secure in! I will need advice on how to set up a large tank effectively so any tips welcome! Have been enjoying the forum so far so thanks for having us! ❤️🐹

Adorable ❤ 🐾 Harry was so beautiful and visibly calm and laid back, it is easy to see why you wanted your new hammy to be just like him, he was gorgeous. But Shelby is lovely and it's super that she is very outgoing (hopefully not too outgoing 😉) ❤

Hi! Wasn’t Harry a handsome gentleman?

Sounds like you’ve got your hands full with Shelby…! What a minx 😆 but so pretty!

We have a bucatstate 2.0 and the base is metal so hopefully she’ll be secure in the 3.0 when it arrives.

Our poor hamster was also misgendered… so we have Mr Maggie now! (Probably a blessing in disguise as I quickly learned that we were woefully unprepared and inexperienced for the potential challenges of female Syrian ownership!)

Thank you so much, this picture was just a couple months before we lost Harry so he was older here! He was a wee chunk and loved his food and treats! Miss him so much. I can’t believe you have a misgendered Maggie - my cockatiel was also misgendered and also called Maggie so became Maggie boy, haha! His cheeks flushed orange one day and we were like okay….! 🙈 He is also gone now as only got around 10 years due to a leg injury they couldn’t get on top of. Was a character aswell! I think I have seen some of your posts, send a pic or your hamster. Xx

Ah thank you! Shelby is lovely aswell yes, she is so active I find it hard to get a decent picture that isn’t an action shot but will keep trying, haha! I think once she gets this tank she will go burrow daft! I have seen your name come up a lot on the forum. What hamster do you have? I’m sure I seen a picture but still figuring out how to navigate the site. Xx

That’s such a mad coincidence! Must be something in the name. 😆 The poor Maggies!

If you head to the Syrian section you can see and read all about the chaotic world of Mr Maggie (if you to have the time and the energy 😆)- I don’t want to hijack your thread here which is all about you and your lovey Hams. ❤️

Hello :-) Harry was gorgeous - so sorry for your loss. And Shelby has such a lovely sweet face - still a baby. I bet she had great fun chewing her way out! But rather stressful and expensive. I've not heard of any issues of Syrians with the Bucatstate 3 so you should be fine. You know looking at her face she does look a bit like a boy to me ha ha. Obviously it's the other parts that determine the sex, and not the face shape, but I've always thought boys and girls had slightly different faces and face shapes :-) She is very pretty though.

Look forward to seeing her in her new set up :-) If you need any tips or ideas - just shout :-) As Magpie said, there is a section under "Your hamster's personal diary or thread" for Syrian hamsters and within that there are threads for individual hamsters so people can follow their progress and photos etc and/or comment :-) I've linked the section here

Thank you! I will def take any tips for set up, I’m gonna have a wee look online tonight to see what I will need and order some bits as haven’t used a tank before. I do like the idea for the burrowing etc tho so I’m not entirely sorry she destroyed her last cage. Now I can justify buying a super set up to the other half. 😂

lol…good luck with a crazy female Syrian 🤪 I was mum to a crazy female Syrian too lol 😝 She will definitely keep you on your toes lol 😂

She honestly isn’t right but sounds like you know all about it. 😂😂😂 Jst been out to nab some salad and straight back in house, isn’t keen on being out early! X
Honestly, Blossom was bonkers 🤪 sweet…but bonkers 🤪

All my hammies and the ger-boys are in tanks. 55 gallon longs are good, as is a 40 gallon wide breeder. Long tanks are about 17" high and easily fit a 12" wheel. Wheel size may be an issue with a shorter, wider tank but the hammie has more usable floor space.

Thanks! I’m waiting on the 3.0 which is 120cm by 60cm so hopefully she’ll be satisfied! 😂
