Hi everyone!
This is Jason the Syrian Hamster-my 4 year old picked him and his name 🙈- we got him today. Although it’s advised not to get hamsters for under 8s,after seeking advice from Pets at Home vet and my sons health visitor we agreed under supervision Jason could really help my son with his additional needs, keep calm and gentle before bedtime . I’ve personally had Hamsters all through my life and Jason is a lovely addition to the family
Pa- sorry for the quality of photo he’s just settling in 🙂

Welcome to the forum. Hamsters are great pets, I hope Jason helps your son. I do love a white hamster, looking forward to seeing more pictures. 😍
There are lots of good files on the forum With lots of hints and tips as hamster care is always changing and evolving.

Hi Sully, welcome to the forum. Jason is a very handsome young man, looking forward to hearing more about him.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Looks like you have a climber there, might be helpful to add a bit more bedding, as they are not always great at climbing down and a soft landing will be useful.
Looking forward to seeing and hearing more about little Jason.

Hello and welcome 😊. Our first hamster was for a six year old - they do need constant supervision but it can be rewarding for them to see what the hamster gets up to and their habits.

I agree with Hank that it would be best to fill the cage base with substrate in case he falls. He’ll maybe also feel more secure as he can burrow and dig then 😊

Is he a Syrian or a dwarf hamster? I can’t quite tell from the photo!

Check out the care guides as well on the home page - a few things have changed in the last few years regarding hamster care.

He’s a Syrian hamster 🙂

Thankyou all for the warm welcome 🙂 he does have plenty of substrate,he had just kicked it all under his shelf 🙈 I’ve topped it up again thismorning particularly the corner he likes to climb currently he’s not got a huge amount of enrichment toys as it was suggested to let him settle a couple days before filling the environment but I’m looking forward to ‘pimping’ his cage 😂 for the moment he’s got a plastic house -that he’s taken no notice of and I will probably change to wood soon- an apple, musli, corn mix chew stick, wooden shelter bridge for him to chew on and climb,a dried corn on the cob,his shelf, one corner is filled with bedding in case he wants to nest outside and the travel box he came in that contains sawdust from his original encloser that he’s part chewing part using as a nest, will be going to the pet shop today to choose some other items later today

He's maybe just checking out the cage :-) They do seem to explore every corner at first. I'm sure he'll settle in within a few days, and then he might enjoy some out of cage time in a bathtub set up like a kind of playpen area, to get used to hand feeding or the odd stroke :-) (ie taming sessions).

Hi and welcome to the forum! I completely missed Jason climbing in the photo, took me a few mins to spot him 🤣 he’s looking like a fun hamster.

Maybe take a look at some of the hamster set ups under the forums tab of “show us your cage set ups” prior to buying other enrichment items, to get a feel of what others are using and what you may like yourselves. If Jason’s looking for places to hideout in the interim you could pop in a tissue box or some cardboard tube’s etc whilst you decide. Great fun setting up a new enclosure, look forward to hearing more 🙂
