Last night, I opened the window ajar for a while, but forgot to close it before going to sleep. When I realized this morning, I immediately closed it, but the room is pretty cold now. I checked on Topaç whether he went into torpor, but he hadn't and now I feel bad about waking him up. Is he likely to go into torpor or get a respiratory infection? Can hamsters survive these conditions? My budgies get sick almost every winter and recover with antibiotics güven bu the local vet, but I dont know if it's the same with hamsters. I'm so anxious right now and I dont know what to do.

A hamster's nest is pretty well designed for good insulation so should be able to withstand a short period of cold in the room. If you can heat the room back up slowly to its normal temperature Topac should be OK. Maybe just keep an eye on him over the next day.

How can I slowly heat the room? I increased the heat from the combi boiler a bit, but I wonder if it would be too sudden.

That shouldn't be a problem. Generally if you are comfortable your hammy should be too. I use Snuggle Safe pods and they can be useful. You heat them in the microwave according to instructions and they are useful for adding a bit of warmth to the cage.

Well, I don't have a microwave but thank you for the suggestion.

Hi there. These things happen - it must have been pretty chilly with a window open all night but maybe it wasn't much different if it wasn't windy? And it sounds like he has done ok. I have a little oil filled radiator (electric) in the room where the hamsters are, which has a thermostat, so it comes on if the room gets below a certain temperature. However some people wouldn't want an electrical item plugged in over night, and to be honest, a combi boiler would probably cost less to come on in the night for an hour eg - but the difficulty there is it heats the whole house rather than one room and it would be a pain to turn radiators on and off every night.

Main thing is - if you have heat on in the evening until bedtime, the hamster has plenty of bedding to burrow down in and some people insultate the cage base by wrapping cardboard and wadding round it. And then the heating comes on in the morning again.

It's a difficult balance because if people are out working all day they tend not to have the heating on all day either and hamsters can get too cold if there's not heating for long periods whenever they are (although freezing temperatures overnight are a big risk).

He should be fine - just keep an eye on him as Socks Mum says :) Is he in your bedroom or a living room?

The heating is on all the time in the house, except in summer, because my mother is home most of the time. Topaç is in my bedroom. He used to be in the living room at first, but I moved him to my bedroom after a few days.

That sounds ok :-)

I have my bedroom window open all the year round and never have any heating on at night. I have kept a good many hamsters in my bedroom over the years and they have always been fine in their nice deep cosy nests.
