Hello all. A few months ago I mentioned my hamster Ren. Ren and I went to the vet today! We have started antibiotic treatment for Ren and after 1 week we will go for a check-up!!! If he does not respond positively to treatment, he will undergo surgery. Waiting for your wishes for Ren

Hello again. I hope the antitiotics help Ren. He really is a sweet looking boy. Do they know what is wrong with Ren? I saw you mentioned possible surgery. How old is she now? These sound like difficult decision, but one step at a time. Keep coming on here and we can help you through it

They said she had a tumor. Ren is 2.5 years old

Sorry I called Ren a "he"! I've edited that now. She is a very grand age. I don't think I would want to have surgery on a hamster that old as the trauma of it and the recovery could be too hard for her. Often the tumour just comes back again as well. It depends where the tumour is however, and how big it is. Assume the antibiotics are in case there is infection as well but obviously they won't cure a tumour.

When they have a tumour, all you can do is give pain relief and keep them comfortable but with many hamsters there comes a point where even pain relief isn't enough and they are suffering to much. So it might be an idea to be prepared for the idea that at some point she might need helping on her way at the vets - to relieve suffering.

Just to clarify, is Ren male or female? I notice you used he and she in various places Just so I reply correctly!

Poor Ren. I hope that Ren is on pain relief because he doesn't look well. I'm sure that you are doing all you can. 2.5 years is quite old and around 90 years in human years i think.

It's true he doesn't look well - maybe ask the vet about metacam as well as antibiotics. If he's not on pain relief already.
