That is a good plan. Have you decided on which species you would like? No, I'm waiting for the stuff from Rodipet to arrive.
Probably a male syrian. I don't know if with short or long hair. I know that a shorthair is probably better, but the hamsters with longhair look so fluffy. That is a good plan. Have you decided on which species you would like?
It is a difficult one. Perhaps when you go to the shelter your heart will choose.Probably a male syrian. I don't know if with short or long hair. I know that a shorthair is probably better, but the hamsters with longhair look so fluffy.
Yes, it's going to be difficult to decideVery sensible to get everything set up first. Also difficult when you have to choose a hamsterThe fluffy ones do look cute - but then the short haired ones can have cute facial expressions. I think the age of the hamster could be important for your first hamster. I think you said the long haired ones were adult hamsters and I’d hate to think of you with a hamster dying on you in 6 to 9 months time.
Thank you, I think this is very useful information. I'd never have thought about this.I say that not just for the longer period of time with the hamster, but so you have more chance of the hamster bonding with you. That could be difficult with an older hamster who has become somewhat institutionalised or had a number of changes. I had a one year old rescue once and he was very instutionalised! Very tidy. But we never really did get a bond and he wouldn't be held. He was used to being in a rescue. Their backgrounds will vary but some older rescues may have had two or more homes and had previous bad experiences affecting them and IMO they do better with an experienced owner. And a new owner does better with a younger hamster.
