Hello, I'll adopt a hamster in two weeks

That is a good plan. Have you decided on which species you would like?
Probably a male syrian. I don't know if with short or long hair. I know that a shorthair is probably better, but the hamsters with longhair look so fluffy.

It is a difficult one. Perhaps when you go to the shelter your heart will choose.🙂

Very sensible to get everything set up first. Also difficult when you have to choose a hamster :) The fluffy ones do look cute - but then the short haired ones can have cute facial expressions. I think the age of the hamster could be important for your first hamster. I think you said the long haired ones were adult hamsters and I’d hate to think of you with a hamster dying on you in 6 to 9 months time.

Yes, it's going to be difficult to decide .

In this situation I would go with your head - and get a younger one. But partly with your heart when choosing between the younger ones. Hope that helps.

I say that not just for the longer period of time with the hamster, but so you have more chance of the hamster bonding with you. That could be difficult with an older hamster who has become somewhat institutionalised or had a number of changes. I had a one year old rescue once and he was very instutionalised! Very tidy. But we never really did get a bond and he wouldn't be held. He was used to being in a rescue. Their backgrounds will vary but some older rescues may have had two or more homes and had previous bad experiences affecting them and IMO they do better with an experienced owner. And a new owner does better with a younger hamster.

Thank you, I think this is very useful information. I'd never have thought about this.

Yesterday I received my parcel from rodipet, so I requested for an appointment and I will be adopting my hamster next Tuesday. I'm so excited preparing everything . I have an appointment with the vet next Friday for a general check-up, I hope everything is okay.

Great! It's lovely to have everything ready and set up before you get the hamster. It's a good idea to give them a settling in period for about 2 weeks to avoid stress, so personally I would postpone a vet check up a bit longer if your hamster seems well and healthy.

I don't think a rescue or animal shelter would let you adopt an unwell hamster.

I only take mine to the vet when they are unwell or i'm worried about something.

Some people take their hamsters for routine check ups so it's a personal choice.

It is a very exciting time for you and people on here. Can't wait to meet your hamster in time.

Finally, the hamster is here. There was only one of the two boys available, so the decision was easy. I had to stay strong because the adult longhair was super pretty.
