Hi everyone,

Just wanted to introduce my baby boy DASH. He is a long haired Syrian with the sweetest little personality. He would love to make some friends. Show us your beauties. 🥰

Hello and welcome to the forum. Dash is gorgeous! How did you choose the name Dash if you do not mind me asking? We have a section on here were we post diaries for out hamsters. It would be lovely if you made a diary for Dash in the Syrian hamster section. You can post pictures and videos and anything else you may like to say about him. It is lovely to have you both here. :)

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Dash is a gorgeous hamster. Looking forward to see more of him.

Thank You! I chose DASH because he does a strange thing where he runs on his wheel for a short time really fast and then stops and plops on his belly on his slide. So instead of a marathon he does a 100 yard DASH. 😅🤣😂 I will definitely do that! I am a picture junkie. I have a serious problem so there will be many entries. 😅🤣😂

It will be lovely to see all your pictures and get to know Dash. :)

Hello & welcome.
Dash does look adorable, look forward to hearing more about him.

Hello and welcome :-) Dash has the most adorable face!

Also if you have any questions about anything he needs, just fire away - if he's your first hamster. Pet stores don't always give the best advice on products for them! One thing to be aware of is fluffy bedding which pet stores sometimes sell, as that's quite dangerous.

No he is not but, have not owned one for a while. By fluffy bedding do you mean the bedding in the picture??

I can't see exactly what it is in the picture :) Fluffy bedding is synthetic bedding sold in bags - called various names like soft nest or Kaytee Bamboo bedding (which is actually made of rayon). The danger with that or any type of fabric in a cage - is that hamsters chew and pouch things - especially things they are foraging for, to make cosy nests, and can swallow it. There have sadly been many cases of hamsters dying and found to have the stuff blocking up their intestines. So if they sold you any, best thing is to take it back or bin it. Plain white toilet paper torn into strips is the safest nesting material and hamsters like it! They pouch the paper strips and add them to their nest and can build their own big cosy nests with it. It breaks down if swallowed.

I was just aware you'd said the pet shop had everything you needed as sadly pet shops do sell some really inappropriate things and cages that aren't big enough. If that's the case we usually suggest taking it back for a refund and telling them it's not big enough! After you've got something else of course. Apologies if this isn't the case as you've now said he's not your first hamster.

That's ok I bought 3 cages and tons of tubes he has a whole wall with 3 different hight end tables one holding each and tuns of twists between them. Lots of room for one little spoiled dude. 😎

That sounds like he has a lot of things to do. Is it a habitrail? Not sure if you've seen the cages article on the home page, but we have a minimum recommended cage size for Syrians. At least one of the cages needs to have approximately 80cm by 50cm of floorspace - even if there are addons. Apologies if you already know that!

Hello and welcome here. Dash is a very handsome hammie and we will all look forward to more such photos and getting to know more about him.

Sounds an interesting set up. Maybe you could post a photo sometime. I guess one of your cages must be a 80cmx50cm cage to accommodate a 28cm wheel which a Syrian hamster needs and the other two are added on via tubes?

He has 2 big wheels. One kayee extreme challenge, one kayee quick clean where i put his toys, and one kayee simple starter connected by tubes. 2 hides. A sand potty and 2 big water bottles and a food dish and treat dish. Will continue to add on. Ill take a picture when he is more settled in.

The modular cages look really fun but hamsters tend to do better with a large area for their nesting, wheel, food and toys. I learned this the hard way with our first Syrian.
