What preventative measures do you take to keep your hamster healthy?

Just general good care really, a good, appropriate diet, hygiene , good housing with plenty of substrate & enrichment, avoiding any kind of stress as much as possible, those are the main things i think, other than being extra careful with diet for diabetes prone species there aren’t really any specific things to avoid health issues.

I agree with all Elusive said but would add, providing a good size cage, deep bedding and plenty of enrichment. This will help reduce stress and I believe this contributes to good health.

Not much to add to that really. Diet is important. Avoiding stress involves not overcleaning the cage and an appropriate set up :) Out of cage playpen time can be important as well, and interacting with the hamster to build a bond and trust. Hamsters vary how often they want or need out of cage time. Also keeping the cage in an appropriate environment - not under or near a draughty window where it can also get too hot from the sun, not next to a radiator or right next to the TV and a room where other pets such as cats and dogs don't go which can stress the hamster.

Cage cleaning tips, to avoid stress, can be found here

Also taking extra care with my own personal hygiene eg hand washing if I have a cold to reduce the chance of passing it on.

Thank you everyone! We are getting our hamster next week, so this is all helpful.

That’s great, look forward to hearing about your hamster when you get him or her.
