After being sold what looked more like a birdcage and frustrating my Syrian, I got rid of it and slid d some research.

The only concern is the dancing around the mushroom house. I have now been told it can be dangerous as their legs can get stuck between the gaps. A valid concern and if so, stuffing the gaps with moss?

I can't see how he could climb and fall on the top of the fence so there's no risk of injury in that sense. But yes people tend to stick bits of bedding or moss in any gaps. Not all bendy stick bridges have large gaps. But a hamster can get a foot caught in a gap and injure themselves. Does the fence go all the way down to the bottom of the enclosure? Does the fence actually need to be there?
. It's very sensible of them too as it means a lot less disturbance for them and, as you say, less cleaning for you. The cage will mostly stay clean and dry with just spot cleaning needed occasionally. I maybe go 4 to 6 months before changing the substrate, and then only do about half the cage or a third of it and do the other part at a later time. Even then I replace some of the old substrate that's clean, on top, so it still smells familiar. Avoids stress for them. I do "prune" the hoard from underneath when doing that section of the cage, so the top part is left undisturbed but the older food removed. They only really hoard dry food and it keeps well. Providing you only give a tiny bit of veg each day, they eat it straight away usually and don't tend to hoard fresh food.
