Gizmo

Hi guys. Let me introduce you Django, my first pet Syrian hamster. Got this little guy from pet store couple of weeks ago, so I gave him a little time before he let me take a few shots of him. He is very careful and cautious little fellah, but last night for a first time he took a treat from my hand. I think he needs just a little more before we start dating.😁 I am always trying to chat with him when he's coming out of his burrow, wich he made in coco fiber. I put him a little handmade corner house in there and Django spends most of his time there. I am still upgrading his enclosure by adding this and that, and will post some pics of his new home soon.

Hello & welcome to the forum.
Django looks really sweet & quite curious in the photos, it sounds as though he’s settling in well & I’ll look forward to seeing more of him.
I did just wonder what substrate you’re using, it’s hard to tell from the photos & as you say he’s made a burrow in some coco fibre which is fine for dig boxes but not really as a substrate.

Hello Gizmo. Welcome to the forum. Django is so cute.

Have a look at the home page on here and you will find lots of tips on choosing a substrate as well as everything else. :)

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Django is such a little cutie and looks very happy with his home.

Hello and welcome - Django is gorgeous! He looks so cute there and looks to be enjoying the cage :) He has lots of nice things to do in there. He already seems quite confident out in his cage. It looks like Aspen substrate to me :). I am sure he will decide on a nesting place and build a nest soon. Sometimes if there isn't a large house that's dark inside, they will just sleep under substrate. The main thing is to have a big pile of torn up strips of plain white toilet paper - so he can take some to build himself a big cosy nest. I can't see everything you have in the cage, but adding a shoe box house could be good - it makes a large nesting box that's dark at one end (the end away from the door). You just cut the base out of a shoe box, keep the lid for a lift off roof, and cut a hole for a door - ideally near one end of one of the long sides (so the other end is dark inside). He will probably move in and build a nest there.

Edit - if you put a bendy stick bridge over the door as well it makes it much darker inside and they also like a tunnel entrance - plus it makes a ramp onto the house roof so that can be like a platform to put the odd thing onto - eg a food bowl or other item. The advantage of a lift off roof is you can check inside occasionally (not too often as they can abandon the house if you take the roof off too much) and check on things or empty a litter tray - because the other advantage of a large shoe box house is - you can fit a corner litter tray inside at the door end at the back and they invariably use it as a toilet! So that helps keep the cage clean and dry and reduces the number of cleanouts and spot cleaning needed. You just take the roof off the house and empty the litter tray once or twice a week. You can just put the usual sand in the litter tray. I use this type of thing which is a good size for a syrian and fits well in a shoebox house. They almost always nest at the end furthest away from the door because it's darker there, so a good place to put the litter tray is at the other end - the back corner opposite the door. This link shows two but I'm sure you can get single ones. Just check the dimensions - this one is the right size but some are huge - for rabbits eg!

Substrate is a mix of aspen shavings and meadow hay. Django has a corner box which he uses as a nest, he put inside some hay and paper to make it cosier. He doesn't sleep in fiber.

Aw that sounds nice he made his nesting box cosy :)

Yes,he has an L shaped handmade house. With flat top and two entrances, one is tunnel and another from the top. I can see he got some hay and paper inside.I will get a pics of his house at next cleaning. Thanks so much for such detailed reply and tips.
Oh,and he has a sand box as well.

That sounds great - and he looks very happy in there :-) I really love that last photo - his little face!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I love your photos of Django. He is very cute 🐹💕

Hi and welcome to the forum. Django is super cute, it takes time to get their homes just how they like them. I found the “show us your cages“ section helpful for inspiration on how to set ours up and what to put in. There are lots of cardboard and homemade creations you can use too.
