Degus were my first venture into rodents as an adult. I saw a solo male in PAH, in the adoption section. He’d been rejected by his siblings, and an attempt to integrate him with another group had failed. I didn’t have a clue, but started to google…….. first cage wasn’t ideal, but plans were hatched to build. Then the forum suggested getting him neutered (really, something that small???, oh you do??) and getting him a girlfriend. I got him 3, built a huge cage, made wheels out of huge cake tins (serious chewing issues, and their teeth are bigger than gerbils or hamsters) and that was one happy little chap! It was also my first venture into forums.

I really loved having degus, but they need so much space - I’m talking entire wall for the cage, and now I’m filling up the house with spinning wheels and looms, I just don’t have it. My current cage acts as a coffee table, as it’s just me here.

I think that deserves a thread on its own :-) It's a great story and I love that you got him three girlfriends :) I remember I think that quite a lot of people became interested in degus rather than hamsters at one time, because they were sociable in that way and could live together.

Anyway if you don't mind, I'll move that last post to a new thread :-) My fault for asking you about Degus in the Rodipet thread 🤣
