April 14th 2023

I first became interested in hamsters when I was about 9 years old because of the hamster-themed anime Hamtaro. 🐹 ( It is still one of my favorite shows. )

giphy (2).gif

I have always wanted to get a hamster, but as a child I wasn't allowed to, due to my parents thinking the hamster would bite, smell bad, make noise, and also because my mother is not fond of rodents.

Fast forward to 2023 and now that I have moved out from my parent's home, I finally have the means to aquire my dream pet. I have been buying the nessisary items, setting up an enclosure and preparing to adopt a hamster for about 2 months. I did a lot of research on proper hamster care and I decided I wanted to get a Winter White Dwarf Hamster, as they were the species that most interested me.

First, I bought a 40 gallon breeder aquarium...I had it for a while, continuously worrying it was too small, so I kept doing more research and decided to return that aquarium to get a bigger one.

I bought and set up a 75 gallon glass fish aquarium, and filled it with Kaytee Clean & Cozy unscented paper-based bedding to about 13 inches at the highest point. I learned online that if you mix the bedding with Timothy hay, the hamster's burrows hold up better. I read that it is best to get the soft orchard grass so it wouldn't poke the hamster's eyes or hurt him. I also tried my best to put a lot of hides, toys, and enrichment items in the enclosure...

Dango's Enclosure .jpg

Many times I was worried and obsessing whether I had put in enough bedding and enrichment. I was really nervous that I wouldn't do things correctly...I learned quite a lot about proper hamster care from many kind individuals online and also from reading books, but I still didn't feel ready.

On the 14th of April 2023 I went to a local Petsmart to look for a natural grapevine branch for my hamster's enclosure. They sometimes sell these for reptiles, but they sadly had absolutely nothing available, so I decided to go look at the hamsters. I do love looking at them in pet stores, even though I don't like how they sell small pets because I am not sure where they source them.

There he was...in the hamster enclosures he was the one right in the middle of all the other hamsters. He was perfect. A small Russian Dwarf Hamster was nuzzled into his 1 inch of bedding at the back corner of his little boxed room. He looked like a beautiful white ball of dough...and to me, as someone studying Japanese, I thought he looked like mochi, a Japanese rice cake. Then, dango ( pronounced "dawn-go" ) came to mind.

IMG_8395 (1).jpg

Dango are sweet Japanese rice dumplings on a stick "🍡", and that ended up being what I decided to name him.

When I came close to Dango's cube enclosure, he noticed me, and he came right up to the glass and put one of his tiny paws on it, looking up at me directly, even though I know he has bad eyesight, I really think he might have been looking at me!

Dango was listed as a Winter White Dwarf, which was the dwarf hamster breed I was interested in, however I wasn't aware that all dwarves from pet stores are hybrids. ( I learned that from this forum! ) To me, as an inexperienced hamster owner, he looks more like a Winter White, but whatever he is, I fell in love.

I spoke to the Petsmart employee, asking her about Dango just out of curiosity. I wasn't originally going to buy him, but I just wanted to ask if I could take a closer look at him. With a cheerful "sure thing!" the employee came to Dango's cage, got out some keys that unlocked the enclosure, and then paused to look at him for a moment, seeming to be thinking. She then turned and called out to a nearby older gentleman employee. She said "Hey (employee's name), isn't this the zombie hamster?"

"Haha! Oh yeah, that's him." The man replied as he walked by us carrying some large Petsmart boxes, probably filled with merchandise. "He isn't for sale anymore though."

"Zombie hamster?" I replied with a slightly awkward laugh. "Why do you call him that?"

The female employee looked at me with a saddened expression. "This little guy's been suffering with a mite infestation since he arrived here, we started calling him Little Zombie because he had a bald head for the longest time, and he was sluggish while sick. Luckily his fur has pretty much grown back."

I looked back at Dango, watching him paw at the glass hopefully. "Has he received good vet care then?" I assumed.

"Yes, he's had quite a few trips to the vet." The employee replied. "We have been giving him medication daily, and now he is mite-free."

I was happy to hear that Dango wasn't suffering anymore for the most part, but unfortunately the employee told me that they had offered him up to a rescue and were preparing to transport him, as no one adopted him, most likely because of his previous appearance and sickness.

"Did you want to see him?" She asked with a friendly tone. "I don't know much about dwarf hamsters, but there's a Syrian hamster here that I really like. She just arrived." She said, pointing to a dark brown / black Syrian that was sitting on a little plastic sandcastle-looking hide grooming herself. I wasn't sure if the employee was just stating a fact or if she was trying to interest me in the female Syrian.

I was watching Dango, who was still peeking up at us as we conversed. He was up on his little hind legs.

20230416_225418.jpg

I kind of dismissed the employee's comment about the Syrian, probably seeming a bit rude, and I asked if I could put my hand in Dango's enclosure, which she promptly let me. I was aware that it might be stressful for him, but I very carefully put my finger in, knowing that it could be dangerous, as hamsters can bite when they are scared or they mistakenly bite thinking your finger is a snack...but I, probably kind of irresponsibly, wanted to let him sniff my finger and see what he would do.

Dango's little whiskers twitched as he sniffed the tip of my index finger, he paused briefly, then he gently nibbled at it curiously. It didn't seem like he was being fearful or aggressive, because it was a very light nibble as if he was hoping for a treat, or maybe just checking me with his senses. The light nibbles didn't hurt at all and his teeth tickled.

"Did he bite you??" The employee asked in a sudden raised voice.

I laughed. "Something like that..." I replied.

She laughed as well. "I thought he might be trying to get a treat from you. Whenever this little guy gets his medication, he gets a treat as a reward."

So with that in mind it seemed to me that he had already become less afraid of humans because of that positive daily interaction.

I looked at Dango and he was on his back feet, sniffing the air in my direction, looking at me with his two giant black tapioca pearl eyes that looked like they came strait out of some bubble tea. I couldn't take it anymore. I had to have him. The employee told me she would give him to me for free, because he was getting ready to go to a rescue anyway and was no longer going to be sold at Petsmart.

"He's perfect." I said, looking at the employee with probably an overly excited expression..."Could I go home and get my travel carrier for him? I promise I'll be right back."

"Oh umm...sure, I guess." The employee replied. I think she might have been a bit surprised or weirded out. But she was very kind and promised to not give Dango away to the rescue or to someone else.

....to be continued.

April 14th 2023 Continued

I came back with the carrier and met up with the same employee. She was surprised by my travel carrier, saying she liked the little strawberry-themed hide that was in there.

The employee scooped Dango up using his little plastic castle hide and she carefully dropped him into my travel carrier.

20230416_221039.gif

He seemed to be happy! He finally had more than 1 inch of bedding to dig in...different substrates, and a mini sand bath. He even bathed right in front of me when I carried him up to the cashier to fill out an adoption form. I was really happy he did that.

I brought him home, trying to drive as smoothly as I could! I went to my room and opened up his travel carrier. He just sat on top of his bedding, surprisingly not trying to escape.

20230416_231024.jpg

It was risky, but I tried giving him a treat. Immediately he took a sunflower seed out of my hand and ate it!!

20230416_221205.gif

I couldn't believe it! I felt so grateful that he would do that for me, even though I know he must have been scared...I offered one last treat before getting ready to move him to his enclosure, and to my surprise, he took that one as well.

20230416_231931.gif

I transferred him to his new enclosure by coaxing him into a measuring cup with treats and using it as a taxi. Once inside the enclosure Dango just went crazy exploring!

He sniffed EVERYTHING and he kept looking at me, probably quite stressed or scared from everything going on, but it still warmed my heart to see his big beautiful black eyes actually look in my direction.

20230414_193532.gif

I learned from experienced hamster owners that it is best to leave hamsters alone for the first few days, or even a week or two. So I left the room once he dug himself a little tunnel in his bedding. That night I set up a camera with night vision in front of Dango's new home. The camera was able to pair with my phone so I could watch him from my bed.

Once the lights were out he was out in the open, running on his wheel, exploring, eating and seeming to be having fun. I still don't understand every hamster behavior, so I'm not sure how happy he is yet, but I hope that he is at least somewhat comfortable.

Now the waiting process begins. I'm letting Dango have time to himself to get used to his new home. As a new hamster owner this waiting process has been difficult, as I want so badly to pet him gently or hold him for a moment or so, but I know I need to wait. I hope a day does come where I can hold him or touch him, but even if I can never do that I still love him so much already.

Thank you SO much for reading my long introduction to Dango's diary! If you have any advice PLEASE share, I would appreciate that so much.

I’ve really enjoyed reading this.
It’s lovely to read about how much care & thought you put in to your future hamsters life getting everything prepared & making the best home.
I can easily see how you fell in love with Dango, he is such a lovely little ham, those eyes are so beautiful & it was really touching to read his story, you were obviously meant for each other & I have no doubt he is going to be one very happy hamster living with you.
Love all the photos & videos too, I ccan see where his name comes from now!
Looking forward to seeing more of him as he settles in & begins to bond with you, I think that bond has already begun to form really.

Elusive! Thank you SO much for this beautiful comment about my diary entry! I'm so happy you enjoyed it and I'm honored you'd even read it.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for saying that Dango will be happy living with me. I really am hoping so!! I'm very lucky to have you and all of the hamster lovers on this forum to teach me how to properly care for my new little dumpling.

Oh gosh, reading this brought tears to my eyes. You and Dango really were meant to be together. It was such a lucky day when you decided to pop into the store and look at the hamsters.

You write so well like you are a writer.🙂

I loved reading your story and how Dango came into your life. I also really love your set up.

Oh wow! This is one wonderful and very touching introduction, beautifully written.

There's no doubt in my mind that you two are meant for each other.

Yes, usually it's advisable to wait for a while to make contact but there are exceptions. Be guided by Dango and go with what he feels comfortable with. He's already taking treats from your fingers so there's no harm in continuing with that and then put a seed on your hand. He may walk on it if he's confident enough already or he may run away in which case it would be better to try again in a few days.

Dango has already been handled and got used to human hands which can make a big difference. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he'd let you gently stroke him already.

He didn't look stressed or scared to me in the video. He looked amazed and enthralled by all the lovely things he was exploring.

I went into a petshop once to buy food and came out with a dwarf hamster. I was drawn to her like a magnet and she climbed onto my hand so i took her home. Edwina and i had this instant bond. She was friendly and comfortable with me from day one.
It does happen that they choose us.

Thank you for sharing your journey to how you and Dango found each other. I do think he chose you :) He is lucky to have a caring thoughtful owner who got everything ready for him. He looks like he was really enjoying exploring his closure. He is absolutely adorable and seems quite confident. As you say he is maybe already a bit hand tame through having had daily meds. I am sure he will thrive in your care :)

Looking forward to hearing more about Dango's progress.

He is gorgeous! what a sweet story. Can't wait to hear about how he adjusts.

Wonderful introduction to Dango and how he came home with you.
Lovely to see the photos and look forward to keeping up with his progress

By the way there is a photo competiton on here if you're interested!

Dango is such a cute hamster!! i'm sure you have taken great care of him and he is lucky to have an owner like you!!

I have been leaving Dango alone for the most part. He seems to be relatively comfortable in his new enclosure and has already made burrows and places to store food. He comes out at night to run on his wheel and play in his little 6-room maze house. He also seems to like the puzzle toy I got for him that hides his daily food, so he has to work to get to it.

20230420_141044.jpg

Today, I wanted to go to a pet store and look for a grapevine branch (again...) for Dango's enclosure...I wanted to buy a branch in person, as I didn't want to get one online. You can never see what they actually look like and it's hard to tell what size they will be.

Unfortunately, there were no branches... Not even any driftwood, which this pet store usually has, but I know that driftwood can be unsafe for hamsters. I wondered if there was a sudden need for reptile branches, as the Reptile Show near my hometown was starting up soon, and maybe people were getting ready to adopt a reptile from there? It's not completely unreasonable to think. With no luck on branches, I decided then to at least get some treats for Dango.

After gathering them up, I brought my 3 items up to the register. I had a small bundle of apple sticks, 1 ingredient freeze-dried chicken dog treats, and a small pack of freeze-dried mealworms.

The woman at the register was friendly but seemed a little nervous. Maybe she was new? I understand that feeling completely, so I tried to come off as friendly. She spoke to me in a cheery voice despite seeming a little uncomfortable.

"So, what are you feeding?" She asked me as she scanned the package of mealworms with a leopard gecko printed on the front. Obviously, the intended consumer.

096316099517main.jpg

"My hamster." I replied with a shy smile.

There was a pause where the whole world went silent. She looked down at the chicken treats that had yet to be scanned. "....Oh, your...... ham-ster?" She repeated in a confused tone.

"Yes, I just adopted him yesterday. He loves treats." I said with an excited smile, still remembering when Dango did the kind gesture of taking those treats out of my hand, without me even starting the taming process yet.

20230420_134953.jpg

"Oh, that's......interesting." She said as she finished scanning. "I didn't think hamsters could eat this stuff."

"Isn't it crazy?" I replied, starting to go into my (probably annoying) hamster-enthusiast mode. "Hamsters are actually omnivores! They can eat certain types of bugs, meat, and even scrambled eggs, as long as they are plain!" I said with a big smile, as I couldn't help thinking of a dreamy sight of Dango eating a little clump of scrambled eggs on a tiny hamster-sized plate, placed on a hamster-sized table...Of course, there had to be a little tablecloth and a miniature flower vase full of dandelions for decor.

"I....see...." The employee replied to me while I was in a daze. She was either unamused or maybe a little weirded out. I didn't blame her, though, as I had been a little overbearing. Now I giggle about it though. I really enjoyed the reaction she had, and I hoped she would tell others of our funny encounter.

I then left with my purchases and returned home to Dango, who was still asleep, hidden somewhere in his enclosure. I didn't dare wake him, so I decided to go start dinner, when suddenly I heard a tiny rustling noise.

Dango seriously must have known I was there to stare at his cuteness. He was nuzzled into his bedding, deep in his peek hide, which is at the bottom of his enclosure. His peek hide is opened up against the glass, allowing me to see him inside of it.

20230418_075303.gif

He sleepily sniffed, putting his tiny paw against the glass as if to say: "Hey, quiet! I'm trying to sleep here!" he looked like a beautiful angel! I wish I could have held him while he slept, but I know that might not be in his best interest, so I was content with gazing from afar.

That night, Dango came out and let me feed him a small chicken treat and 2 mealworms. He seemed surprised by these new flavors, eating them very quickly, while I was surprised he was letting me feed him.

After he finished his treats, he crawled onto my hand to see if I had any more... I was practically holding him for the first time!! In that magical moment, I felt so blessed that we were able to find each other. I hope one day he likes me maybe at least half as much as I love him!

Thank you so much for reading this entry of Dango's Diary!

That last photo of Dango is beautiful! It is lovely hearing about him. He is back to normal after his out of cage time very quickly. And it sounds like you've educated another member of the public about hamsters! I think we've all done that at times. Talked enthusiastically about hamster details while people look dazed.

I think you two will have a lovely bond. It's clear he already trusts you.

Maz! Thank you SO much! 😭 I'm so glad you enjoyed this entry, and thank you for saying the photo of Dango is beautiful! It warms my heart to hear you say Dango trusts me. I'm grateful for the bit of trust he has in me, and I hope it gets stronger!

Hehe, I'm glad you can relate to what I experienced...It's fun to talk about hamsters now that I know more about them! However, I'm still learning everyday, and not long ago I was like the cashier I mentioned! It's not her fault that she didn't know, unfortunately we have to do pretty extensive reasearch to know the proper care for hamsters. I didn't know either until I did deep research. I still make mistakes...but I'm glad Dango is forgiving!! 🤣

Once you get to know one, you realise they are amazing little creatures and people often don't realise that.

The photos of Dango are really gorgeous, he is such a handsome little guy!
Really good to hear how well he’s doing now too.

Aw, what a magical moment for you when Dango felt comfortable to go on your hand! That is so special. You took such a beautiful photo of him.😍
