Like many other things, different brands of hamster mix have become harder to come by since the pandemic. Zooplus in particular, no longer sell the Bunny Dream mixes for Dwarf and Syrian hamsters (they don't ship to the Uk anyway). I now get these from ebay or Vetsend who stock them.
Current good mixes are:
Harry Hamster - this contains everything needed, whole peanuts in shells and is sugar free. It may not be the best in terms of ingredient variety but it does the job. It has the correct levels of protein at 18%. It's widely available and sold by pet shops and Amazon in the Uk and Europe.
Bunny Dream Hamster (for Syrians) - not easily available but Vetsend and some stockists on ebay have it. I use this mixed with Harry Hamster and slight protein supplements during the first year of a hamster's life. For Uk and Europe.
Bunny Dwarf Hamster dream expert - also not easily available and stockists as for the Syrian version. This is a very good mix for dwarf hamsters as has dwarf sized pieces and smaller seeds which they enjoy. I use this exclusively for our Robo. It's a little low in protein at 15.5% so I supplement with high protein treats such as a nut once or twice a week. It also contains mealworms which they seem to like! For Uk and Europe.
Rodipet organic hamster foods - for Uk and Europe
Rodipet have a variety of mixes - for younger and older Syrians, for dwarf hamsters and one for hybrid dwarf hamsters specifically tailored to their tendency to acquiring diabetes. Rodipet will ship to the Uk from Germany. Some of the mixes (not all) are lower in protein and that would need supplementing, especially in the first year.
They also sell dried insects like crickets for supplementing protein. If your hamster will eat them! Mine always turned their nose up at dried insects!
Supreme Science selective Hamster food - this is an all in one pellet mix. While it's good softened, for older hamsters who have teeth problems, it's better to use a muesli mix.
Little One Syrian mix and Little One Dwarf hamster mix. These have a good variety of ingredients. Protein is a bit low for a hamster under 1 year old, so protein needs supplementing.
In the US:
There don't seem to be any dwarf specific mixes so it would be the same mix for both Syrian and Dwarf hamsters (likewise Dwarf hamsters can have Harry Hamster which is fine, but if possible they prefer the dwarf mixes with smaller seeds).
The one usually recommended in the US is Higgins Vita Garden which has 15% protein so the protein needs supplementing.
Harry Hamster is also available in the US, as is Hazel Hamster. The two mixes by Supreme petfoods are indentical but with different naming/labelling for different countries. There has been some querying of the protein levels being labelled as different between the two. Supreme say this is just how different countries display a guaranteed analysis, but the content is the same.
Supreme Science Selective is usually available in the US too.
If anyone knows of any more suppliers or different mixes they use or recommend, please post here.
