Hello,

Looking for advice. We have a very sweet dwarf hamster but we are moving from Kansas City to South Florida by car, in July. I have young kids so long stops to get out and play are a non-negotiable. I’m concerned about taking the travel carrier around with us during stops, and overall it just seems like it would be really difficult. Am I overreacting? Is there a doable way? My kids are sad of course at the idea of rehoming her, but we want to do what’s best for Fresca. Thanks for reading!

Hi there. I’m not up on US geography 😊. How far is that? Or how long a journey? More than one day?

Hi! 23 hours, but we would take it over 3 or 4 days. The heat is partially my concern as it will be very humid and likely upper 90 degrees F.

Ah right. If taking it over 3 or 4 days, it could be difficult to take a hamster yes. You could maybe manage one overnight stop. It does take a lot of organising moving with a hamster. How old is Fresca? I think there are some "pet moving" services, who could get her there quicker. Or if someone you know could maybe take her by train would that be quicker? They are usually fine with the odd stop. They tend to sleep in the pet carrier during the day. If staying overnight somewhere, a cage would need to be set up really so she isn't in the pet carrier permanently,

I just googled and it shows a train from Kansas to Miami as a 12 hour journey. Obviously not for all of you but, if you could leave her with a neighbour or relative for a few days until you get to your new place, and then someone bring her by train to you :-) Or one of you travel back by train to collect her - could be expensive!
